Could technical director James Allison co-exist with F1 design guru Adrian Newey at Mercedes? He sees no reason why not.
The major highlight leading up to the Miami Grand Prix this month was the surprising news that Newey’s tenure with the Red Bull Formula 1 team had concluded. Furthermore, he will completely part ways with the Milton Keynes-based organization by the end of the first quarter in 2025.

Newey-designed F1 cars have secured a remarkable 25 titles so far. This number is likely to rise to 27 by the conclusion of the 2024 F1 season. Consequently, there is a strong anticipation that he will attract significant interest from rival teams once he is no longer affiliated with Red Bull and becomes available.
Another figure regarded as an F1 design great is Mercedes technical director Allison, who has played his part in 21 title triumphs across his F1 career.
If Mercedes were to make an effort to bring together these two dominant forces, Allison believes that any conflicts can be avoided as long as everyone’s responsibilities are clearly established.
Asked by Sky Sports F1 if he could work alongside Newey at Mercedes, Allison replied: “That is quite a hypothetical question, but I see no reason why not.
To effectively utilize Adrian, any team considering him on the market should have a clear understanding of everyone’s roles. They would need to address how to maximize his potential upon his arrival.

After announcing his departure from Red Bull, Newey emphasized that he presently has no intentions of returning to Formula 1. However, he later hinted that his involvement in the sport might not be completely finished and there could be more to come in his career.
“I mean, popular question at the moment,” Newey said in an interview with Eddie Jordan with Oyster Yachts when asked what his future holds.
“If you had approached me 15 years ago, when I was 65 years old, and asked if I would ever contemplate switching teams, venturing into a different path, and dedicating another four or five years, my response would have been, ‘You’re completely insane.'”
After that, a series of events occurred simultaneously. My father, a veterinarian, possessed a great passion for cars, and it’s clear that his enthusiasm influenced me. Eventually, he expressed his desire to retire at the age of 60, but ended up semi-retiring at 62. He relocated with my mother to Yorkshire and continued to work sporadically as a locum until he turned 65, at which point he officially retired.
To be completely honest, it’s a little moving to admit this, but he seemed to have lost his sense of direction during his retirement. I had expected him to derive great joy from working on cars and pursuing his hobbies, but he seemed to have lost his passion for it.
I approached Bernie Ecclestone and Roger Penske, two individuals whom I greatly admire, seeking to uncover their secrets. Their ability to continuously thrive and remain mentally and physically sharp, despite their age, is truly remarkable.
Both of them reiterated the common comparison of the brain to a muscle, emphasizing the necessity of exercising it regularly in order to maintain its functionality.
Furthermore, my passion for becoming a designer in the field of motor racing ignited when I was merely eight or ten years old. Fortunately, I have been able to realize this aspiration by securing my initial job in the industry, and I have remained in the thrilling world of motor racing ever since. Consequently, every day I have the privilege of working in this field feels like an unexpected reward.
“I am absolutely passionate about my work, but I do anticipate taking a well-deserved break in the future. Similar to Forrest Gump’s sentiment after his lengthy run, I may feel a bit weary at the moment, but I will likely embark on another journey soon.”
Throughout his illustrious Formula 1 career, Newey has successfully crafted championship-winning vehicles for renowned teams such as Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull.
