James Vowles, the team principal of Williams, is engaging in discussions with other drivers regarding a seat for the 2025 season, in addition to the current driver, Logan Sargeant.
James Vowles has responded to reports of Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz being linked with Williams for a drive in 2025, amid questions over Logan Sargeant’s future with the team.
The team principal of Williams expressed that he feels the weight of responsibility concerning Sargeant, but no final decision has been made regarding Alex Albon’s teammate. It is worth mentioning that the Thai-British driver recently extended his contract until at least 2026.
Williams team principal responds to Bottas, Sainz links
Reports from Speedcafe and Vasabladet earlier this week heavily linked former Mercedes driver Bottas with a return to Williams next season, claims which PlanetF1.com understand to be verified, while reports elsewhere on Thursday linked outgoing Ferrari driver Sainz with a potential move to the Grove-based team in 2025.
When asked about these claims in Monaco, the team principal gave no clear answer about what might happen and mentioned that the team’s decision for the next season will be swiftly communicated once it has been finalized.
When asked about the latest links regarding their F1 2025 candidates, Vowles joked to Sky F1, “Carlos who?”
He stated, “The reality behind those situations is that I engage in conversations with multiple drivers, and I prefer to maintain the confidentiality of those discussions within their respective groups rather than making them public.”
We will ensure that any discussed matters are promptly shared with the world for everyone to witness.

Regarding Sargeant, Vowles expressed his efforts in supporting the young American driver, commending him for effectively handling the Formula 1 pressure ever since joining the sport.
In addition to his contentment with his performance in Monaco last year, he expressed his approach of collaborating with his drivers to help develop their skills.
Vowles emphasized the significance of maintaining transparency and honesty with drivers while discussing his management approach towards Sargeant.
The observed behavior is partly due to a natural response, as he carries a significant burden on his shoulders. However, he has been handling this pressure skillfully since the start of last year.
“He displayed impressive speed in F2, although not quite flawless. It’s worth mentioning that he also showed considerable pace last year. When working with individuals, we focus on highlighting their strengths, acknowledging their weaknesses, and collaboratively devising strategies for improvement.”
