The Phoenix Mercury, having just delivered their worst offensive performance of the entire WNBA season, must now swiftly bounce back for another challenging match against the New York Liberty tonight (7:00 pm ET, CBS Sports Network).

In a 70-47 defeat against the Connecticut Sun, the Mercury (3-3) had a rough night shooting, with only 23.8% accuracy from the field. Out of their 63 attempts, they managed to convert just 15 shots, with a dismal 1 out of 27 success rate from beyond the arc. Prior to this game, the Mercury held the top spot in the WNBA for made three-pointers per game and were second in perimeter percentage.

While it may not be ideal to face another top team on the road right after a disappointing performance, it does leave little time for dwelling on the past. Will this lead to a powerful comeback? Or are we headed for another devastating defeat?

After a promising start to the season, is Mercury’s performance declining as they come down to earth?

Phoenix’s offensive struggles against the Sun were evident after the team allowed 107 points in their loss to the Dallas Wings on Saturday.

In the game against Dallas, Kahleah Copper and Diana Taurasi had an outstanding performance, scoring a total of 60 points. Copper contributed 32 points, shooting 11 of 22 from the field, 4 of 7 from three-point range, and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line. Taurasi added 28 points, making 10 of 20 field goals, 6 of 13 three-point shots, and 2 of 2 free throws.

However, in their game against the Sun, their performance was quite different. They only managed to score a total of 13 points. They struggled with their shooting, making only 4 of 25 field goals and missing all 12 attempts from beyond the arc.

It is unlikely that we will see a repeat of that, but can the Mercury deliver a competitive performance at Barclays Center?

Perhaps, this could be the perfect opportunity to catch the Liberty at a vulnerable moment. While it may be premature to worry about New York, their recent defeat against the Chicago Sky at home followed by a disappointing 84-67 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday suggests they are currently in a slump.

Given that both teams are aiming to recover from subpar offensive performances, I choose to adopt an optimistic perspective and predict that the total score will exceed expectations.

However, can the Mercury cover the spread? Typically, I tend to believe that underdogs of this magnitude can cover, and I will stick to that belief even in this situation, despite the Liberty being at home and the Mercury playing on a back-to-back.
