NASCAR Xfinity Series Hy-Vee PERKS 250 Predictions & Picks: Will Allgaier Win in Iowa Return?

The NASCAR Xfinity Series is back to oval action today, following two weeks on road courses. The Hy-Vee PERKS 250 marks the series’ return to Iowa Speedway since 2019, with the race kicking off at 3:30 pm ET in the USA.

Shane van Gisbergen, who emerged victorious in the Pacific Automation 147 in Portland and the Zip Buy Now, Pay Later 250 in Sonoma, is aiming for a consecutive third win today.

Although the three-time Supercars champion has thrived on NASCAR’s road courses, exhibiting dominance reminiscent of his success in Australia, his performance on oval tracks has been lackluster. Out of the 11 oval races this season, he has managed to secure a top ten finish only twice. As a result, he is viewed as a highly unlikely contender for today’s race.

However, due to his consecutive victories, SVG has secured a spot in the Xfinity Series championship playoffs, alongside Austin Hill and Chandler Smith, who have also won twice.

Hill and Smith, along with Cole Custer and Justin Allgaier, are competing in a four-way battle for the Xfinity Series regular season championship. Notably, Allgaier emerged victorious in this race last year.

Current NASCAR Xfinity Series Standings (Through 14 Races)

  • Cole Custer – 509 points
  • Austin Hill – 497
  • Chandler Smith – 497

  • Sheldon Creed – 396
  • Parker Kligerman – 379
  • Shane van Gisbergen – 362
  • Sam Mayer – 339

Smith, Allgaier, and Custer are considered top contenders in today’s race, and John Hunter Nemechek has also emerged as a favorite with high odds at BetOnline for the Hy-Vee PERKS 250.

Hy-Vee PERKS 250 Predictions & Picks

After a four-year absence, Iowa Speedway is making its return to the NASCAR Xfinity Series calendar. This race had been a part of the schedule from 2011 to 2019 but was unfortunately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Subsequently, it was excluded from the schedule for the years 2021 to 2023.

In the previous race, Christopher Bell emerged victorious, crossing the finish line before Custer and Allgaier. Both Custer and Allgaier had hopes of becoming the race’s two-time winners, following in the footsteps of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (winner in 2011 and 2012) and Sam Hornish Jr. (winner in 2014 and 2016).

Previous Hy-Vee PERKS 250 Race Winners

  • 2011: Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
  • 2012: Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
  • 2013: Trevor Bayne
  • 2014: Sam Hornish Jr.
  • 2015: Chris Buescher
  • 2016: Sam Hornish Jr.
  • 2017: William Byron
  • 2018: Justin Allgaier
  • 2019: Christopher Bell

My prediction for the winner of the Hy-Vee PERKS 250 is Allgaier, who achieved a second-place finish at Portland and a sixth-place finish at Sonoma. In previous editions of the race, Allgaier had participated with a full-time NASCAR Cup Series ride in 2014 and 2015, consistently securing a spot in the top ten.

  • 2011: 8th
  • 2012: 6th
  • 2013: 8th
  • 2016: 7th
  • 2017: 9th
  • 2018: 1st
  • 2019: 3rd

With his remarkable track record and current performance, he is an excellent choice for this event. Allgaier has achieved a race victory and ten stage wins in his last eight races, consistently placing within the top six on five occasions. Furthermore, as a seasoned competitor in the series, he also has favorable odds of -110 at Bovada for a top-three finish, a wager that I am confidently placing.

Custer’s performance at Iowa Speedway has been impressive. In 2019, he secured a second-place finish, while in 2018, he landed in fourth place. His consistency on the track is evident, as he has achieved six top-five finishes and 11 top-ten finishes this season. With such a strong track record, it’s no wonder he is favored at -120 for another top-five finish. As the defending series champion, Custer is poised for a remarkable performance today, and I have full confidence in his ability to deliver.

In conclusion, although I have a strong affinity for my Allgaier and Custer selections, my top pick in terms of value is Sam Mayer to achieve a top-five finish (+150 at Bovada).

Mayer is not one of the race favorites, but since a rough start to the season, he has been on a pretty torrid run. Over his last eight races, Mayer has six top-four finishes, including a win in the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 at Texas Motor Speedway. He may not win today, but the JR Motorsports driver will once again be near the front at the end.
