On Tuesday, the Minnesota Lynx achieved a remarkable feat by scoring 100 points in their victorious game against the two-time defending champions at Michelob Ultra Arena. The Lynx displayed exceptional shooting skills, with a 55.2% field goal percentage and a remarkable 55.6% from beyond the arc. Moreover, each of their five starters contributed significantly, reaching double-digit points.

The Aces (5-5) have experienced a three-game regular season losing streak for the first time since August 2019, when they were defeated by the Sun, Lynx, and Fever while playing away.

Tonight’s game against the Mercury (6-6) doesn’t promise to be any easier. Phoenix has been on a winning streak ever since Brittney Griner returned to the court after sitting out the first ten games of the season.

Likewise, the Sparks (10 of 25, 40%) and Lynx (15 of 27, 55.6%) also showcased their shooting prowess from outside in their respective victories over the Aces.

Throughout their two championship-winning seasons, the Aces would occasionally surrender a considerable number of points. Nonetheless, their offensive dominance effectively neutralized this setback. However, since Gray’s absence, this has ceased to be the situation.

The Mercury lead in three-point attempts among all teams, with an average of 29.7 per game, and they make 9.8 of those attempts. This translates to a shooting percentage of 32.9%, ranking them seventh in the WNBA. While the overall percentage may not be exceptional, Phoenix has the advantage of having Kahleah Copper and Diana Taurasi, two sharpshooters who can ignite the scoreboard on any given night.

Shooting has been a crucial factor in the first two games between the two teams. In their earlier loss to the Aces on May 21, Phoenix displayed impressive shooting skills, making 15 out of 36 (41.7%) shots from beyond the arc. In that game, Taurasi successfully made 7 out of 11 three-point shots, while Copper made 3 out of 7. This outstanding shooting performance allowed the Mercury to stay competitive until the Aces sealed the victory by scoring the last six points.

Despite Gray’s absence, the champions’ talent is undeniable, making it difficult to not be optimistic and support their ability to correct their course sooner rather than later. This outcome would be ideal, especially considering their upcoming series of home games against tough opponents such as the Liberty (11-2), Storm (8-4), and Sun (11-1) following tonight’s contest.

Although it won’t be an easy task, the Mercury currently find themselves in a favorable position. Despite not having Griner, they displayed exceptional performances in their two previous matchups against the Aces. Anticipate both teams scoring heavily once again, but this time it is likely that the visiting team will return home with a sense of satisfaction, if not outright relief.
