David Croft, the commentator for Sky F1, directs his gaze towards the camera.
Sky F1 commentator David Croft repeatedly made a point about Max Verstappen’s early morning sim racing after a fiery approach to team radio in Hungary, leading to backlash for Croft.
Verstappen consistently vented his anger over the radio regarding strategy and his collision with Lewis Hamilton at the Hungarian Grand Prix, his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase baring the brunt of that as things got tense between driver and race engineer once again.
David Croft links irritated Max Verstappen to sim racing activity
Once again, Verstappen found himself blending his real-life racing endeavors with the virtual realm. In the lead-up to the Hungarian Grand Prix, he actively participated in the 24 Hours of Spa event, even racing at the untimely hour of 3am.
During the radio exchange, Sky F1 lead commentator Croft took the opportunity to repeatedly emphasize Verstappen’s intense criticism towards Lambiase.
Croft commented during the race, stating that Max Verstappen appears to be resembling someone who stayed up late last night engaging in a sim race, which he indeed did, and then woke up early this morning to participate in another sim race, which he also did. It seems that Verstappen could have benefited from a good night’s sleep in Budapest, as suggested by Croft. However, Croft expressed his thoughts without intending to sound overly critical.
Croft faced a wave of fan criticism on social media after repeatedly connecting Verstappen’s grumpy demeanor to his involvement in sim racing.
One fan expressed their opinion, stating that Crofty should cease his belief that Max should have chosen sleep over sim racing.
The car, not Max, is the problem.
Another fan expressed their frustration, saying, “Crofty, please stop talking about Max participating in sim races. This has happened nine times already, mate.”
Another critical comment expressed, “It’s a sign of how bad things have gotten when even Ted Kravitz is defending Max and mentioning that he has previously won a race while participating in sim racing the night before. I’ve had my fill of Crofty’s terrible commentary.”
Another fan shared, “Although I’m not a Max Verstappen supporter, if Crofty brings up Max Verstappen staying up late for sim races again, I might have to mute Sky F1.”

In an extended post, a particular fan expressed their opinion that Croft’s commentary was verging on being “distasteful” and posed a potential risk to their reputation.
“The fan posted, amidst the chaos surrounding Lewis, Max, McLarens, and everything else, let’s not overlook the disastrous commentary exhibited by Sky today.”
There was definitely some action in this race.
“There was absolutely nothing noteworthy happening in this race that required any fillers.”
Max was definitely not in the running for the victory in this race.
It is quite unappealing to constantly mention that someone sounds like a driver who was sim racing late at night, which reflects poorly.
While it is acceptable for Sky Sports to be a British broadcast, the extent of their targeting and inappropriate commentary is unacceptable and deserves to be criticized.
After engaging in a fierce battle with Hamilton for the last spot on the podium, Verstappen ultimately secured a P5 finish in the Hungarian GP despite their collision.
