Scottie Scheffler U.S. Open Odds: World Number One Expected to Prosper at Pinehurst

When the 124th U.S. Open tees off this morning in Pinehurst, North Carolina, everyone will begin on the same score. But for all intents and purposes, the field will be in pursuit of the undisputed best golfer in the world and tournament favorite, Scottie Scheffler.

Rankings often fail to accurately reflect the true champion, whether in team or individual sports. Nevertheless, in this instance, Scheffler’s position is well-deserved and likely to remain so, regardless of his performance this week on the field and course.

In Dublin, Ohio, Scheffler emerged victorious at the Memorial Tournament last weekend, securing his fifth winner’s check of 2024. Remarkably, all five of his wins have occurred in his past eight tournaments, each one being a prestigious event on the PGA Tour.

To begin with, he put an end to his streak of not winning for a year by securing a five-stroke victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The next week, he shot a final-round 64 to become the first golfer to win The Players Championship in back-to-back years.

The following month, he earned his second green jacket with a four-stroke win at the Masters. That was followed the next week by a victory at the RBC Heritage.

Then, after two awful results at the PGA Championship (a tie for eighth) and the Charles Schwab Challenge (a tie for second), Scheffler celebrated his first win since becoming a father with his one-stroke triumph at Muirfield Village.

Ever since Tiger Woods’ reign over the PGA Tour came to an end on a November night in 2009, numerous individuals have emerged as both genuine contenders and mere pretenders to his throne.

However, Scheffler is currently occupying a position in the air that none of them have, and it seems likely that he will continue to do so in the future.

2024 Results for Scottie Scheffler

  • The Sentry: tied for 5th

Since 2009, the record for the most wins in a full season has been held by Woods, who won six times. However, Day and Spieth managed to come close in 2015, as did Thomas in 2017, each winning five times. Scheffler has the potential to surpass this record with a victory this week or at any other time during this season. If he manages to secure two more wins, he will become the first player since Woods in 2007 to achieve a remarkable seven wins in a single season.

Scheffler has already spent a total of 91 weeks at number one, 56 of which have been consecutive as of this week. This achievement places him in the sixth position for the most weeks spent at the top spot. However, it is anticipated that he will surpass Nick Faldo’s record of 97 weeks and secure the fifth position this summer.

When he tees it up at Pinehurst #2 today, Scheffler will be a part of a star-studded trio that features world number two and PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, who rounds out the top three in the current world rankings and the top three U.S. Open favorites.

Having hosted the U.S. Open in 1999, 2005, and 2014, the renowned course presents a formidable challenge for all participants, including Scheffler. However, despite the difficulty, Scheffler is favored by the U.S. Open odds to have a promising start and a successful week. In fact, his odds are the shortest since Woods, who finished as the runner-up in 2007.
