Bunce Diary: Boxing remains a glorious business

Allow me to guide you on a brief expedition, commencing from the rear of York Hall, an area perpetually strewn with lifeless pigeons and abandoned vapes, all the way to the esteemed Olympic ring in Paris this summer.

I must confess, it won’t be a straightforward journey, but stay with me as there will be opportunities for exhilarating fights, memorable moments, and a rollercoaster of emotions. We will witness thrilling debuts, redemption stories, and even shed some tears. It’s a boxing weekend, and we get to experience this excitement every single week.

Charlie Edwards fought for more than just the belt last Friday at the packed York Hall; he fought for his life. This was evident in his commanding victory and impressive performance, considering he had fought for a world title almost eight years ago.

The next night in Manchester, he sat beside me, bearing a couple of marks and a trace of dark blood from a cut. However, his happiness was evident as he had regained his soul, and as grand as it may sound, it was undeniably true. Witnessing Charlie’s triumph and seeing him smile that night would make for a satisfying weekend. It is crucial for the boxing industry to have more skilled British fighters competing for world titles, ensuring its continual growth. Although the weekend had its fair share of darker moments, there was much more to it than meets the eye.

Once, Zelfa Barrett occupied the most inexpensive seats at the Manchester Arena, but now, as I interviewed him in the ring, he gazed up at those very seats. It was a truly enjoyable moment. Every boxer should strive to chase their dreams, and Zelfa continues to do just that, holding onto his aspirations.

Jordan Gill has endured a dark journey that we are all aware of. Despite his incredible talent and strength as a fighter, we must not turn a blind eye. Now, he needs our support, even if it may sound tough. Jamie Ward, a valuable addition to the ringside support team, accompanied Gill to the forest where he once contemplated ending his life. This level of trust is truly remarkable. While there may not always be clear answers to life’s toughest questions, there are always solutions. If you can, be a part of the solution. Gill has nothing left to prove and will always receive a well-deserved standing ovation when introduced in the ring. This kind of respect cannot be replaced by any championship belt.

“After clinching the world title, Rhiannon Dixon triumphantly declared in the dressing room, ‘Back in the hospital, I used to boast about my boxing skills to the elderly men, only to be met with their dismissive responses of ‘Yeah, so did I’. But now, perhaps they will finally believe me.’ The room radiated with her joy as Ant Crolla, flanked by his fighting brother, Will, and the Croft twins, Ioan and Garan, basked in the glory of Dixon’s newfound status as a world champion.”

Crolla and Dixon had spent a considerable amount of time operating discreetly while Joe Gallagher trained at Amir Khan’s gym in Bolton. I had personally captured their activities on film or audio numerous times and observed their relentless dedication. It was evident that they put in immense effort during their training sessions. It was no surprise that Crolla wore a constant smile on his face. Their dressing room on Saturday nights around 10.30pm was always filled with joy, making it feel like one of the happiest places on earth. It is worth noting that their stable of fighters is quite impressive.

As Dixon was trying to grasp the reality of winning the title, a man with a noticeable limp, a black hat, and an abundance of confidence prepared to accompany Ellie Scotney to the boxing ring. This man was none other than Billy Graham, a central figure in the most memorable boxing nights in Manchester. Holding Scotney’s belt high, Graham made his way to the spotlight once again, exuding his trademark intensity. He entered the arena with the same fierce demeanor as before, making his presence known. Scotney’s performance did not disappoint, evoking a wave of emotions for those who were present during Billy and Ricky Hatton’s initial encounter.

Scotney’s grandmother was a prominent figure in her triumphant dressing room. While conversing with Ellie, I could sense her comforting presence, accompanied by tea, biscuits, and encouragement. Although she has departed, her spirit will continue to resonate in every dressing room henceforth. There was an abundance of untold stories behind the three main fights, surpassing the rounds that were merely televised.

I managed to have a quick conversation with Jimmy Sains, and we were both impressed by the bravery displayed by his opponent and his opponent’s corner. Despite Mateusz Kalecki suffering a severe cut in the first round, the ringside doctor examined the injury and allowed the fight to proceed. Ultimately, the fight ended in the fourth round, leaving both of us in disbelief. It was admirable that Kalecki refused to give up, sending a powerful message.

Tom Welland, just a baby in the boxing world, emerged victorious in four matches at York Hall the previous night. Despite his young age, Welland possesses remarkable fighting skills, raising hopes of his potential qualification as an Olympian this summer. The journey leading to this point is intricate, peculiar, and unbelievable, yet undeniably true. There is a possibility that Welland may receive an invitation to travel to Bangkok within the next week for the final Olympic qualifying event. Credit goes to John Evans for delving deep into the details of this captivating tale. Interestingly, Welland is eligible to represent the Philippines in boxing, and they are keen to have him join their team. It’s important to note that these events are not fictional but rather a testament to Welland’s talent and potential.

The weekend of fights was packed with excitement, featuring the highly anticipated debut of Christian Fetti at York Hall. Stuart, Christian’s father, proudly declared, “We sold out all our tickets. They couldn’t give us any more.” Christian emerged victorious, much to the delight of the 300 cheering fans. On another note, a captivating love story unfolded during a fight on Saturday night, but my lips are sealed as I am sworn to secrecy. Such an exhilarating business it is.
