Reports suggest that another exciting fight has unfortunately been canceled today (March 18), following closely after last week’s postponement of Josh Taylor vs. Jack Catterall II.
The welterweight fight scheduled for March 30 between Tim Tszyu and Keith Thurman, meant to be PBC’s first pay-per-view event on Amazon Prime, has been canceled. Thurman sustained an injury to his biceps during training, prompting his withdrawal from the fight. As a result, Tszyu is now in need of a new opponent.
ESPN’s Mike Coppinger suggests that Sebastian Fundora might be the likely opponent for Tszyu as a result of Thurman’s injury. Fundora was initially scheduled to fight Serhii Bohachuk in a vacant WBC title match on the undercard. However, due to Thurman’s unfortunate situation, it is now highly possible that Fundora will step in to face Tszyu for the WBO super-lightweight championship.
If that turns out to be true, both Fundora and Tszyu deserve credit. Fundora for seizing the opportunity despite recently experiencing his first loss, and Tszyu for agreeing to the switch even though the contrast in styles between Thurman and Fundora is significant and striking. It is worth noting that transitioning from preparing for a relatively inactive and potentially declining former champion, who is five foot nine and fights in the orthodox stance, to now preparing for a six foot five southpaw who is still improving, is a remarkable change in direction. It is also a substantial risk.
Ryan Hafey of Premier Boxing Champions reports that Keith Thurman has been ruled out.
