Esteban Ocon gives latest update on F1 future after Alpine split confirmation

Alpine will part ways with Esteban Ocon after the conclusion of the 2024 season.

Esteban Ocon has teased that he will announce his plans for the F1 2025 season “very soon” after it was confirmed that he will leave Alpine at the end of F1 2024.

Alpine announced on Monday that Ocon will leave the team at the expiry of his contract at the end of the F1 2024, having spent a total of five seasons with the Enstone-based outfit.

At the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, Ocon secured his inaugural F1 triumph with Alpine. Furthermore, he clinched two more podium finishes at Sakhir 2020 and Monaco 2023.

The 27-year-old has been connected to several teams for the upcoming season, including Haas and Williams, both of which are Ferrari customers. Additionally, there have been talks of Audi taking over the current Sauber team when they officially enter Formula 1 in 2026.

If Audi is unable to secure their top choice, Carlos Sainz, Ocon is expected to be a prominent candidate on their list of alternatives.

During the recent Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Ocon shared with media outlets, including PlanetF1.com, that he continues to identify as a Mercedes junior driver. This statement has led to speculation that he may aspire to replace the seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton in F1 2025.

Ocon, who took his first steps in F1 with Alpine (then competing under the banner of Lotus-Renault) a decade ago, has paid tribute to the team – and teased that he will provide an update on his F1 2025 plans in the near future.

He expressed, “Being a part of this team in Formula 1 has been a significant chapter in my life.”

“My journey as a professional racing driver began at Enstone when I was just a teenager, and although I have been here for five years as a full-time racer, this place holds a special significance for me.”

“We have shared many wonderful and challenging moments together, and I am truly appreciative of everyone in the team for creating these unforgettable memories.”

“My plans will be announced shortly, but for now, my complete dedication is towards achieving success for this team and ensuring a fruitful end to the season.”

The departure of Ocon from Alpine opens up a position alongside Pierre Gasly. The team has stated that they will announce their F1 2025 driver lineup at an appropriate time.
