Fernando Alonso and Adrian Newey.
Fernando Alonso said it is a “privilege” that Adrian Newey is being linked to Aston Martin, as the Formula 1 design guru prepares to depart Red Bull.
Newey will officially leave Red Bull after the first quarter of 2025, meaning at that point he will be a free agent and there is not thought to be any shortage of interest in his services.
Fernando Alonso excited ‘legend’ Adrian Newey linked to Aston Martin
There is speculation about Ferrari being the next team for Adrian Newey if he decides to continue his F1 career. However, Aston Martin is also rumored to be pursuing Newey, as team owner Lawrence Stroll reportedly met with him at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix to discuss a lucrative offer.
Alonso expressed his belief that the potential move of Newey to Aston Martin is “positive news.”
“He is a legendary figure in the sport, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be driving in Formula 1 at this moment, alongside Adrian, whom I have been competing with for the past 20 years,” he expressed to Formula 1.
Being associated with Aston Martin is a privilege, and it is an excellent indication and positive news for us that a sporting legend and Aston Martin have some kind of connection.
Mike Krack, the team principal of Aston Martin, asserted that discussions regarding the departure of Newey from Red Bull started extensively across the grid, potentially even before it was officially announced.
“He mentioned that as soon as someone of that caliber became available, eight teams initiated immediate discussions, and possibly even prior to that,” he shared with Formula 1. “Thus, these discussions are both internal and involve conversations with him and his associates.”
“It will be fascinating to observe how this situation unfolds in the end.”
When asked if Aston Martin is one of the interested teams, Krack clarified by saying, “Absolutely. Every team is interested.”

During an episode of the Beyond the Grid podcast, Newey expressed his career regret of never having the opportunity to collaborate with Alonso or Lewis Hamilton. However, if he were to make a comeback to Formula 1, he could rectify this by either joining Aston Martin to work with Alonso or being part of Ferrari where Hamilton is expected to race starting from F1 2025.
When questioned about any remorse he may feel for declining Ferrari’s offers in the past, which he did while being involved in IndyCar in 1993 and 2014, Newey responded with a mixture of emotions, admitting that he does feel some regret to a certain extent.
Working with Fernando and Lewis would have been absolutely amazing, for instance. However, it was merely a stroke of unfortunate circumstances that prevented it from ever happening. Such is life, sometimes things just don’t align.
Once Newey becomes a free agent during F1 2025, Alonso will be signed into a multi-year deal with Aston Martin, while Hamilton will secure a similar agreement with Ferrari.
