Deontay Wilder is back in the old routine

Deontay Wilder is prepared to revive his ‘killer’ instinct, as he feels no judgment awaits him for embracing that persona in Saudi Arabia.

On June 1, the Alabama puncher is set to make a comeback to the ring. He will be taking on Zhilei Zhang as the captain of Team Matchroom in a groundbreaking 5 vs 5 event against Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions.

Wilder’s upcoming appearance will mark his first fight since his disappointing performance against Joseph Parker on December 23. In that match, he suffered a unanimous decision loss to the underdog from New Zealand.

Despite his lacklustre performance that night, there were suggestions that the 38-year-old might be past his prime. However, Wilder insists that the formidable version of him will make a comeback in time to confront Zhang.

In December 2018, the ex-WBC heavyweight champion faced backlash for expressing his desire to have a ‘body’ on his record prior to his fight with Tyson Fury. This proclamation was largely dismissed as a thoughtless outburst made in the heat of the moment, mere empty words that would fade away after the fight concluded. Wilder, on his part, later clarified that it was merely his alter ego, the ‘Bronze Bomber,’ speaking, a persona that surfaced exclusively in the boxing ring.

He repeated his statement a few months later, cautioning Dominic Breazeale to prepare some “funeral arrangements” ahead of their scheduled May 2019 clash.

“Breazeale’s life hangs in the balance in this fight, and I truly mean his life,” Wilder stated previously. “I’m still aiming to add a knockdown to my record… So if it happens, it happens. This sport is ruthless and far from genteel.”

“We may not intend to strike each other in the head, but it happens nonetheless. Any reputable doctor would confirm that our heads are not designed to endure such blows. Curiously, this is the sole sport where causing fatal harm is both permissible and financially rewarding. As it is within my legal rights, why not exercise this option?”

After facing difficulty in landing a significant punch against Parker throughout the 12 rounds in December, Wilder claims that his former self has returned, a statement that brings great joy to the Saudi organizers.

“They [media and authorities] said how I wasn’t so good for boxing because I wanted a body on my record,” Wilder told Boxing News.

However, with the involvement of the Saudis, they express their desire to have that monster, that killer, that man who speaks like that returned. When you encounter individuals who appreciate you for who you truly are, it urges you to revert back to your previous self promptly.

I’ve received approval to embrace my true self without facing judgment. I can express myself freely without being condemned. In the past, when I dared to be authentic, I faced severe criticism and was metaphorically crucified, burdened with thorns, and stabbed by others.

Despite years of disagreements, primarily regarding the elusive fight with Anthony Joshua, Wilder’s choice to join forces with Team Matchroom entails working alongside Eddie Hearn for the very first time. It is noteworthy that the much-anticipated bout between Wilder and Joshua has yet to materialize.

Regarding the unexpected business deal with Hearn, Wilder expressed, “It’s truly wonderful. Despite years of conflicts, disputes, and various obstacles, life has now presented an opportunity for change, and change is invariably positive.”

When considering the current scenario, it is important to acknowledge the evolving landscape, particularly the intriguing presence of individuals like the Saudis who are revolutionizing boxing. They are altering the way we promote the sport, arrange fights, and various other aspects. Hence, why not embrace this opportunity to collaborate with one another?

“It’s not necessary for us to have a personal liking for each other in order to conduct business. However, with time and familiarity, we begin to comprehend each other’s perspectives and can peacefully coexist. That’s the essence of it all.”

“I am delighted that we have reached a stage where we can peacefully coexist with one another. As someone who constantly fulfills the expectations of a promoter’s ideal, I believe I am truly a dream come true for Eddie. It brings me immense joy to be a member of Matchtoom and to hold the position of captain.”

Both individuals were present at the launch press conference for the June 1 event earlier this month and even took pictures together, marking a significant departure from their long-standing rivalry.

However, Wilder has become more philosophical lately, stating, “Business will always be business; you simply need to understand how to manage it appropriately.”

Both sides hold steadfast to their beliefs and opinions without harboring any ill feelings. However, when we come face to face, respect prevails, and there is nothing amiss in that. If I engage in a disagreement with you in the presence of my children, I will demonstrate how I resolve it. It is crucial to never leave an argument unresolved or leave others questioning its resolution.

It’s alright if you don’t agree with me now, because with time, you might come to realize that what I said was actually correct.

It is highly unlikely that Wilder’s aspiration to harm an opponent will ever be considered anything other than extremely misguided.
