There have been strong indications connecting Carlos Sainz to Audi’s potential entry into Formula 1.
Carlos Sainz has quashed a rumour he turned down Audi to ‘risk’ his future on a Red Bull or Mercedes call-up, the Spaniard says there is “no truth” to that.
Even before Ferrari revealed they would not be extending his contract, there were already rumors connecting Sainz to Audi. However, rather than confirming Sainz, Audi has announced that Nico Hulkenberg will be joining them for the 2025 season.
‘There are certain things that don’t depend fully on myself’
That had Spanish journalist Antonio Lobato claiming Sainz had turned down the German manufacturer, who will rebrand the Sauber team as Audi in 2026, as he’s hoping to land either a Red Bull or Mercedes race seat.
Lobato wrote on X, stating that he made the choice to decline the offer and intentionally miss the deadline for response. Although accepting the offer would have provided him with peace of mind and a lucrative financial offer, he opted to take a risk and explore opportunities with a more competitive team.
He proceeded to specifically mention Red Bull and Mercedes.
Sainz, however, says there’s no truth to that claim.
In Miami, he informed the media, “That’s incorrect. There is no truth to it.”
As previously mentioned, there are certain factors beyond my control that require some waiting on my part.
“However, for now, we haven’t come to a complete standstill. We are actively engaging in discussions with individuals and progressing as much as possible.”
“However, all of these tasks entail waiting, as I mentioned earlier, for individuals to come to decisions in various domains.”

However, as Sainz patiently awaits the outcome of other variables, there have been suggestions that Audi may decide against signing the three-time grand prix champion.
When asked if he had received any guarantees from Audi about their willingness to wait, he responded: “No, the only assurance I have is my own determination to make the right decision. That’s why it’s taking a little longer and why I want to explore all available options before making any significant choices.”
I believe that Nico’s decision to join Audi is a logical choice for both parties involved. Having observed Nico’s talent as a driver, I am convinced that he is an exceptional choice for Audi. I want to extend my congratulations to Audi for making such a fantastic signing, as Nico has proven his capabilities during his time at Haas.
The Spaniard clarified that his choice to wait had no connection to his lack of faith in Audi. He acknowledged that Audi is a company that consistently emerges victorious, just as they did with his father Carlos Sainz in the Dakar.
“He always speaks highly of Audi, the project, and his unwavering confidence in Audi’s potential to dominate Formula 1,” he remarked.
“If you examine the Volkswagen projects closely, you’ll notice their consistent success in motorsports, regardless of whether it’s with Porsche, Audi, or any other brand within the Volkswagen group. This track record of winning is a crucial asset that should be duly acknowledged and taken into serious consideration.”
“However, my decision takes into account numerous factors. I sincerely hope that Audi will strive for victory in the future, as it would add another strong contender and enhance their already impressive brand. I wish them all the best, although I have yet to determine if I will be a part of that possibility.”
