Padres vs Nationals Predictions & MLB Picks Today (7/25)

The Padres aim to complete a sweep of the Nationals in today’s game. Following their 4-0 victory in the first game of the series, San Diego continued their dominance with a resounding 12-3 win over Washington less than a day ago.

The Padres started off on a rough note, falling behind 3-0 after the first inning. However, they swiftly turned the tables and scored an impressive 12 consecutive runs. San Diego’s batters had an outstanding performance, racking up a total of 20 hits. Leading the charge were Xander Bogaerts and Jackson Merrill, both recording an impressive four hits each.

The victory wasn’t anything new for the Padres, who’ve won four straight matchups following yesterday’s victory. Additionally, San Diego is 6-1 SU across its last seven road games, outscoring those opponents by an average of 2.6 runs per game. It’s been a team effort throughout that stretch, highlighted by Bogaerts, Merrill, Jurickson Profar, and Jake Cronenworth each recording at least nine hits while batting .310 or better.

The Nationals’ recent series has humbled them after a strong start to the second half, marked by a three-game winning streak. However, their struggles against NL West teams continue to hinder their progress, evident from their disappointing 7-13 win-loss record against the division in 2024.

San Diego has a win-loss record of 12-12 against the NL East, for future reference.

Xander Bogaerts has been one of the Padres’ best players on the road lately.

The Nationals’ record against the Padres in the 2024 MLB season is now 0-5. In those games, they were outscored 40-21, which makes it understandable why it’s difficult to have confidence in the home team. Additionally, the Nationals have a record of 1-5 in their last six games against San Diego at Nationals Park.

Backing the hosts becomes a challenge due to the struggles of Nationals left-handed pitcher Patrick Corbin. In his last 12 starts, Corbin, a two-time All-Star, has only managed to secure a single win. During this period, he has recorded a 5.00 ERA and has struck out only 50 batters in a span of 68 1/3 innings. Additionally, the situation was further exacerbated by the fact that Washington’s offensive performance in those games averaged a mere 2.8 runs per game.

In the meantime, Dylan Cease, the MLB strikeout leader, has been performing exceptionally well. Over his last five starts, the former NL Cy Young finalist has maintained an impressive 2.64 ERA. Additionally, Cease has been averaging 12.6 strikeouts per nine innings in those games and has not conceded a single earned run in his most recent two starts, spanning across 13 innings.

Padres RHP Dylan Cease is playing some of his best baseball at the moment.

Taking the last few games and the entire season series into account, the Padres should win today. San Diego has outscored Washington by an average of 3.8 runs per meeting in 2024 and I don’t see that trend stopping given Corbin’s struggles this year. As long as the visitors keep doing what works, victory will be theirs.

With that being said, let’s take the Padres to cover the run line seeing as how four of their five wins over the Padres this season came by two or more runs.

Despite being interrupted by injury, Bogaerts has been incredibly successful with this prop. In his previous 13 games, where he had 50 at-bats, the two-time World Series winner has an impressive slash line of .360/.353/.480. Additionally, he has accumulated 18 hits and two home runs during this period. Bogaerts has also consistently averaged 1.8 total bases per game and has finished with the Over outcome on eight occasions.

With his perfect record of 4-0 in his recent four matches, there are numerous reasons to trust Bogaerts today.
