‘Don’t buy that one bit’ – Christian Horner’s Adrian Newey claim scrutinised after Red Bull exit

During the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix, Christian Horner and Adrian Newey were captured on camera, wearing smiles, reminiscing about happier moments.

Sky F1 presenter Natalie Pinkham has rejected Christian Horner’s claims that Adrian Newey’s importance to Red Bull had diminished prior to his shock exit.

Red Bull officially announced on Wednesday that Newey, the driving force behind Red Bull’s remarkable Formula 1 triumphs, will depart from the team in early 2025. Throughout his tenure, Newey played a pivotal role in crafting championship-winning vehicles for Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen at the Milton Keynes-based racing outfit.

Adrian Newey’s Red Bull influence examined after Christian Horner claims

Amidst rumors that the 65-year-old has received contract offers from Aston Martin and Ferrari, reports suggest that Ferrari might announce the signing of Newey after the Miami Grand Prix this weekend. The news of Newey’s departure adds fuel to the speculation.

Newey’s decision to leave the team has been speculated to be influenced by his deteriorating relationship with Horner. This speculation gained traction after the long-serving team principal had an investigation into his conduct dismissed in February.

Horner has made an effort to praise other members of Red Bull’s technical staff – including technical director Pierre Wache – over recent times, with his comments angering Newey’s wife Amanda.

In January, when the suggestion arose that Wache was accountable for the design of the RB19 car, which would dominate in 2023, Mrs. Newey swiftly reacted on Twitter, dismissing it as utter nonsense.

Horner had previously stated that Red Bull’s technical structure was no longer dependent on Newey. In response, she expressed her disbelief by stating, “That is utter nonsense.”

During her appearance on the F1 Nation podcast, Pinkham expressed her disbelief in the notion that Newey’s influence has diminished.

According to Mark Webber, he is the greatest and most influential figure in F1 history who will continue to have a significant impact in the future.

“Even before I became a part of the sport, he informed me about this. I asked, ‘Who holds the title of the largest figure in F1?'”

“I anticipated his response to be Bernie or one of the drivers, but to my surprise, he confidently mentioned Adrian Newey.”

I believe we should never underestimate the immense value he brings to the sport and the exceptional culture he has established at Red Bull. I wholeheartedly agree that he is like a conductor, guiding the entire team.

So, you’re saying that despite his lieutenants implementing many of his theories, it’s unthinkable for anyone to oppose his theories or design ethics?

“This guy is a genius.

“I believe that the recent narrative being circulated serves a certain agenda, suggesting that his impact on the team may have decreased.”

“I simply cannot believe that. I have absolutely no faith in it whatsoever.”

“And I believe their longing for him will be profound, surpassing the absence of any other driver who might join or leave the team.”

“Max is extraordinary, yet Max openly acknowledges that it is the machinery beneath him that truly makes the distinction.”

Pinkham’s colleague, the F1 journalist Christian Menath, chimed in, stating, “This is a colossal undertaking, isn’t it?”

In my opinion, the loss of someone with such knowledge is immense. They not only possess genius-level creativity in their ideas, but also hold a wealth of knowledge from their long service in both the team and the sport of Formula 1.

I am aware that there is a common belief that the construction of cars today is not solely reliant on one brilliant individual, but rather a collective effort of a team of engineers.

“That could possibly be accurate, yet with my extremely limited understanding, I envision Adrian Newey as a maestro conducting an orchestra.”

According to Christian Horner, Max Verstappen’s driving is comparable to a metronome, executing every action flawlessly. However, I believe that the true metronome behind the scenes is Adrian Newey, the engineer.

“He holds the position of the chief engineer in Milton Keynes, and I believe his absence will be greatly felt by his colleagues.”

Newey’s departure conditions, skillfully managed by his close friend and manager Eddie Jordan, potentially grant him the opportunity to commence work with a competitor team as soon as 2025.

Despite Jordan hinting that retirement is likely to be Newey’s next move, F1 press conference host Tom Clarkson is convinced Newey will remain in the sport and lead a team’s development plans ahead of F1’s next major regulation changes in 2026.

He stated that his extensive experience will be crucially important as we navigate the upcoming 2026 rule changes.

In my opinion, the current situation appears to be favorable for both the remainder of this year and the year 2025. This is primarily due to the fact that the aero rules will be revised and expanded starting from January 1, 2025, paving the way for potential changes for the year 2026.

“All the design offices and wind tunnels will be dedicated to the ’26 project, utilizing Newey’s incredible 40 years of experience in the sport.”

“Every team he joins will desire the same, as they gear up for 2026.”

“So, what’s his next destination?”

“Do you think he only desires to retire and relax on a beach? I highly doubt it. His competitive nature wouldn’t allow that.”

The Adrian I am familiar with is constantly filled with an unquiet spirit. He possesses an undying desire to engage in various activities, especially in the field of design, which he continues to adore.
