Toto Wolff in Red Bull firing line after publicly courting Max Verstappen

CEO Oliver Mintzlaff is not impressed by Toto Wolff’s efforts to entice Max Verstappen to leave Red Bull.

Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff believes Toto Wolff needs to focus on “his own problems” and expressed confidence in keeping Max Verstappen.

After the Mercedes team boss and CEO Toto Wolff openly expressed interest in attracting Max Verstappen from Red Bull, Oliver Mintzlaff, the Austrian CEO of Red Bull, has shared his perspective on the situation.

Red Bull CEO: I understand the pressure Toto Wolff is under

With the relationship between Red Bull and Max Verstappen appearing not quite as unshakeable as it has been in the past as the end of the current regulation cycle edges closer, Wolff has been making overtures to attempt to lure Verstappen away from the Milton Keynes-based squad.

Since January, Red Bull has faced a series of challenging months due to an internal investigation initiated by its parent company, Red Bull GmbH, regarding the behavior of Christian Horner, the team boss.

The investigation, which was dismissed before the season opener in Bahrain, has sparked a visible power struggle within the team. Horner, supported by the Austrian and Thai shareholders, seems to be at the center of this conflict.

In light of the turmoil, CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has acknowledged the potential departure of Verstappen and used the opportunity to criticize Wolff’s efforts in luring his driver away from Red Bull.

“I understand the pressure Toto Wolff, and perhaps other teams, are under after years of being behind,” Mintzlaff told Germany’s Bild.

However, I believe Wolff should prioritize addressing his own issues, as he already has plenty to deal with. Moreover, constantly discussing personnel matters of other teams is not respectful, and it is not the appropriate thing to do.

There were rumours circulating that Verstappen had received a significant contract offer of €150 million after Wolff showed interest in signing him. However, Verstappen himself clarified that he is not motivated by money when it comes to choosing a team. He emphasized that his main focus is on being able to compete for victories, and he would feel dissatisfied if he couldn’t pursue that goal.

“In Miami, he expressed to the media that his contentment lies not in monetary gains, but in the satisfaction he already derives from being a part of the team.”

Having the fastest car and a positive environment are crucial. We currently possess both, which aligns with my expectations. As long as the environment remains favorable and we maintain our position as the quickest, things will go smoothly.

Ultimately, regardless of whether that scenario were to occur or not, a sum of 150 million dollars would not be the determining factor for me in choosing a destination.

I am content with my current earnings as it is based on my performance.

“I’m well aware that whenever I find myself in the position of driving for P5 or P6, I tend to become rather irritable. Ultimately, it all boils down to performance. I mean, this is common knowledge, even Toto [Wolff] acknowledges it.”

Verstappen made it clear that his current focus is on Red Bull, despite the tempting big-money offers rumored to be on the table, leaving doubts about his indecisiveness regarding his future.

Oliver Mintzlaff: ‘Thoroughbred’ Max Verstappen shares DNA with Red Bull

Mintzlaff expressed confidence in retaining Verstappen despite Mercedes’ attempts and unlimited financial resources, emphasizing the shared mindset between the driver and the team.

“He’s a thoroughbred racer,” he said, “determined to triumph in every race, every qualifying round, and every training session.”

“Our connection is deeply rooted in our DNA, binding us together. He thrives in the ideal environment we provide. Through our exceptional efforts, we have established an unparalleled foundation and crafted the finest Formula 1 vehicle.”

“Max has not indicated any intention to abandon his long-term contract here and remains committed to fulfilling it.”

“I have no concerns about his potential move. It’s just a matter of waiting for things to settle down. That’s what Max desires, and it aligns with our goals as well. It’s crucial for long-term success in sports like football or Formula 1.”

Mintzlaff expressed his belief that Verstappen, alongside Red Bull’s continued dominance in F1, is highly unlikely to entertain the idea of leaving the team for a competitor as he sets his sights on clinching a fourth consecutive World Championship victory.

“He wants the fastest car, and as I previously mentioned, we have exactly that,” he stated.

“Max’s ultimate goal is to become the World Champion, and we firmly believe that he stands the greatest chance of achieving it with our support. Max is known for his unwavering loyalty.”

He is aware of the unwavering trust that Christian and Helmut have always placed in him, and he sincerely appreciates it. Additionally, Red Bull is an exceptional brand that he strongly relates to, making it even more compelling for him to remain.
