Transaction Analysis: Flyers Extend Konecny through 2032-33

Travis Konecny, the All-Star right winger for the Flyers, has agreed to an eight-season contract extension that will begin in the 2025-26 season. This deal has been signed with one season remaining on his current contract.

Travis Konecny, an All-Star right winger, has been signed by the Flyers for an eight-season extension that will commence from the 2025-26 season, with one season left on his current contract. This new agreement ensures Konecny’s tenure with the team until the 2032-33 season.

Starting from the 2025-26 season, the average annual value (AAV) of Konecny’s contract will increase from its current $5.5 million to $8.75 million.

At the age of 28, Konecny recently completed two consecutive seasons in which he scored 30 or more goals. In the 2023-24 season, he earned the esteemed Bobby Clarke Trophy as the Philadelphia Flyers’ most valuable player and secured a spot in the NHL All-Star Game for the second time in his professional hockey career.

Konecny expressed that his primary objective in securing his new contract was to secure the longest possible term (eight years) allowed under the Collective bargaining agreement. Although he acknowledged the occasional stress that accompanied the negotiation process, he is now relieved that the deal has been finalized.

Konecny expressed, “Since the beginning, I’ve been committed to the long-term journey. This team has shown unwavering faith in me, and I wanted to reciprocate that support.”

According to Konecny, the initial step involved having a conversation with his wife, Karly. Both of them reached a unanimous decision that it was an obvious choice to remain in Philadelphia, rather than exploring other options and potentially moving in the coming year.

On Tuesday, Konecny expressed his long-held desire to become an alternate captain for the Flyers, a goal he finally achieved this past season.

Konecny expressed his long-standing desire to become a team leader, stating, “Being a role model is something I’ve always aspired to be.” As the upcoming season approaches, he aims to lead through his actions and set an example for others.

The new contract signed by Konecny can be considered, on a leaguewide scale, as most similar to the one inked by Timo Meier with the New Jersey Devils last summer: an eight-year deal worth $8.8 million annually. Both players were selected in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft (with Meier being slightly older by approximately five months) and have showcased comparable performance levels in the NHL.
