Is it possible for Charles Oliveira to enter a UFC lightweight title fight without much competition? That’s what his coaches are optimistic about, and considering the current circumstances in the 155-pound division, it’s not an entirely unrealistic scenario.
Islam Makhachev, the reigning lightweight champion, successfully defended his title against Dustin Poirier in June. Poirier showed his readiness to fight, being the sole individual willing to step up to the challenge. Now, a comparable scenario appears to be unfolding for Makhachev’s upcoming championship bout, slated to occur in Abu Dhabi in October.
Charles Oliveira lost his last fight (and No. 1 contender spot) to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300, but Tsarukyan tried to punch a hater in the crowd on the way to the cage, earning himself a nine month suspension. That means he wouldn’t be clear to fight until 2025. Oh no! But if Tsarukyan makes a video for an anti-bullying program, the suspension gets slashed to six months, putting him back in play for UFC 308.
We’re not sure how Team Oliveira is digesting this news, but “Do Bronx” coach Diego Lima was telling AG Fight in a new interview they hoped Charles can step in if Arman is out.
Lima discussed the negotiations with UFC, mentioning that there were extensive discussions and she shared her idea and desires with them. However, now they await the input of UFC regarding Charles. It was emphasized that UFC holds a strong affinity for Charles and prioritizes his well-being. Lima made it evident that their goal is to pursue the championship title again. Both Charles and Lima are determined to attain the belt, especially since Arman is currently suspended, leaving no other contenders but Charles Oliveira.
“He’s ranked second, and when we consider the rankings, there’s nobody else suitable for Makhachev to compete against,” he expressed. “Poirier recently faced him, and Gaethje suffered a knockout. Therefore, with Arman sidelined, I genuinely think that Charles is the only viable option to fight Makhachev at 155. It aligns with our desires and what Charles himself wants.”
Naturally, the outcome is not within our control as it involves a company called UFC and an opponent named Makhachev, correct? However, from our perspective, that is precisely what we desire.
We get why Lima is hopeful. The only thing standing in the way of an Oliveira title shot is a hot-headed Georgian who’s one middle finger away from a serious assault charge. Assuming Tsarukyan won’t be available in October isn’t all that far fetched. He could not do the anti-bullying video, or punching someone making the anti-bullying video. Anything is possible.
And if Tsarukyan keeps his anger issues under control, there’s always Alexander Volkanovski.
