The MLB schedule for Friday starts at 2:20 p.m. ET as the New York Mets (35-38) face off against the Chicago Cubs (36-39) at Wrigley Field for a three-game series.

After their winning streak of seven games came to an end with a 5-3 loss to the Texas Rangers, the Mets are now closely monitoring their rebound. On the other hand, the Cubs are aiming for their third consecutive victory following Dansby Swanson’s exceptional performance, where he secured 2 hits, 1 home run, and 3 runs batted in, leading them to a 6-5 triumph over the San Francisco Giants.

Will New York be able to regain momentum in Chicago, or will the home crowd have something to celebrate?

Let’s not waste any further time and jump right into my preview of the Mets vs. Cubs match, including predictions for the game and the top MLB bets.

Mets vs Cubs MLB Betting Trends

  • In their most recent seven road games, the Mets have emerged victorious in six of them.
  • In their previous 20 home games against the Mets, the Cubs have won 13 and lost 7.
  • In six out of the Mets’ last eight games against the NL, the total hit the Under.
  • In 10 out of the Cubs’ last 12 games, the total hit the Under.
  • In five out of the last six Mets-Cubs matchups, the total score fell below the predicted amount.

Mets vs Cubs Predictions & MLB Picks Today (6/21)

Today’s game kicks off the last Mets-Cubs series of the 2024 MLB season. These National League teams faced each other at Citi Field about two months ago, playing four games and ending with a tie of two wins each for New York and Chicago.

Now, let’s move our focus to Wrigley Field, where the Cubs have had a mixed performance lately. In their previous 13 home games, they have a record of 6 wins and 7 losses. However, in their last two encounters with the Giants at Wrigley, the Cubs managed to outscore them with a total of 11-7. Furthermore, when playing against New York, Chicago has been quite successful at home, winning 13 out of their last 20 games, including three victories in the last four matchups.

That being said, it is important not to underestimate Carlos Mendoza’s team. It should be noted that the Mets had an impressive winning streak of seven games before their loss against the defending World Series Champions on Wednesday. During this streak, they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.3 runs per game.

In addition, it’s worth noting that the Mets have an impressive record of 6-1 in their previous seven away games and have also achieved a commendable 10-8 record against NL Central teams in 2024. On the other hand, the Cubs have struggled with a 6-8 record against NL East opponents.

The Mets have been killing it on the road throughout the last few weeks.

This afternoon’s game will determine which version of Jose Quintana will appear for the Mets. It’s been a mixed performance for him this season with a 2-5 record, 4.98 ERA, and 1.369 WHIP in 14 starts. However, in his last outing, the seasoned left-handed pitcher impressed by allowing only one earned run and striking out six batters in six innings. Adding to his advantage, the Mets are up against the Cubs, who have struggled with a 5-10 SU record against left-handed pitchers.

By the way, Quintana has an impressive 2.45 ERA in his last four matches against Chicago, managing to strike out 19 batters in 22 innings.

Regardless, Quintana will need to put in a significant effort to outperform Shota Imanaga. The Chicago Cubs’ top pitcher has an impressive record of 7 wins and only 1 loss, along with a remarkable 1.89 ERA in 13 games. Furthermore, he averages 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. It is worth noting that Imanaga had a remarkable performance against the New York Mets on May 1, pitching seven scoreless innings and striking out seven batters in a 1-0 victory.

Shota Imanaga has lived up to the hype in his debut MLB season.

Taking the above into account, let’s back the Cubs to win. It’s just hard to doubt Chicago whenever Imanaga starts, especially since the team has only lost two of his first 13 MLB starts. For comparison, the Mets are 3-5 in Quintana’s last eight appearances. Besides, Chicago knows how to handle New York at home.

We’ll keep things simple with a Cubs moneyline bet as well. Again, I’m confident in Chicago’s outlook mainly due to the fact that Imanaga embarrassed New York’s lineup once this season. It’s going to be tough getting anything going off him and as long as he brings his usual stuff to the mound, this game is the Cubs’ to lose.

Imanaga has been a standout pitcher in baseball throughout the year, evident from his +750 odds to win the NL Cy Young (5th) on BetOnline. The talented Japanese left-hander has impressively given up fewer than 2.5 earned runs in 12 out of his 13 appearances, maintaining this exceptional performance in his most recent three starts as well.

Given the Mets’ inability to score against Imanaga in their previous encounter, it is highly unlikely that they will have many chances to score today. It is advisable to bet on the Under.

Best Mets vs. Cubs MLB Prop Bet: Shota Imanaga u2.5 Earned Runs (-154)
