New Kimi Antonelli theory comes to light after Toto Wolff responds to Imola rumours

Who will take the Williams seat: Logan Sargeant or Kimi Antonelli?

Toto Wolff may be insisting Kimi Antonelli will “not” make his F1 debut this season, but Dutch commentator Olav Mol says he does “not believe” the Mercedes team boss.

As Logan Sargeant, the driver under scrutiny for Williams, participated in his potentially inaugural American race for the season, reports emerged suggesting that it might be his sole appearance. Williams has apparently sought permission for Antonelli to take over racing duties.

Kimi Antonelli reportedly lined up to replace Logan Sargeant

Because the Italian is not yet 18 years old, he would require permission from the FIA to participate in a Grand Prix. He is expected to reach this milestone on the Sunday of the Dutch Grand Prix.

The request to the FIA was made by an unidentified team, reportedly affiliated with Williams as a Mercedes engine customer.

Antonelli potentially taking over Sargeant’s spot in the upcoming Imola race was rumored, however, Mercedes team boss Wolff has refuted these claims.

Despite believing in the Mercedes junior’s talents and potential, Wolff firmly stated that Antonelli would not be joining Williams in the near future.

He stated that this is unlikely to occur as it is not something Mercedes desires. He further added that these rumors have been exaggerated and suggested focusing on Formula 2 instead.

Dutch commentator Mol believes the complete opposite to be true, despite his vehement statement.

During his appearance on Viaplay’s Race Café, he expressed his disbelief in Toto Wolff, emphasizing that this viewpoint greatly impacts his perspective.

“Why bother seeking a dispensation for a super license if you have no intention of allowing him to drive?” Mol questioned. “What’s the purpose behind permitting him to participate in a race simulation and a qualifying simulation at Imola?”

“If the team bosses deny it, then it must be true! No one is interested in driving that Williams, except for Antonelli, if given the opportunity…”

Robert Doornbos, a former Formula 1 driver, concurs with Mol’s viewpoint, suggesting that Mercedes should follow the same approach they employed with George Russell and evaluate Antonelli’s skills by testing him in the Williams team.

“He said it would be foolish to invest so heavily in that boy and not give him an opportunity. Just like George Russell, throw him into that Williams and let’s see what unfolds.”
