No top-ranked national seed has won the College World Series since 1999. This streak is on the verge of continuing through the current season, as the CWS championship series Game 2 between #3 Texas A&M and #1 Tennessee is scheduled for this afternoon at 2:00 pm ET on ABC.
Yesterday, in Game 1, the Aggies (53-13) swiftly gained the upper hand against the Volunteers (58-13) and successfully maintained a significant lead throughout the match, securing a triumphant 9-5 win.
Both teams hit two home runs, but the inning that blew the game open did not feature a long ball. In the top of the third, A&M scored five runs using four singles, an error, and a walk. When the dust cleared, they were up 7-1, adding to the advantage they held from the moment freshman sensation Gavin Grahovac belted the third pitch of the game out to right for a solo home run, his 23rd big blast of the season.
Tennessee attempted to make the game more exciting in the bottom of the seventh inning after trailing 9-2. However, their three-run effort was their final score of the game, leaving them facing the possibility of falling short of their championship objective once more.
The Aggies are just 27 outs away from defeating the Vols and claiming their first-ever championship. Given their impressive performance in Omaha so far, it wouldn’t be unexpected for them to achieve a sweep, despite Tennessee being strongly favored to force a Game 3 in the finals.

Tennessee vs Texas A&M Betting Analysis
In a make-or-break game for their season, the Vols will be relying on Drew Beam (9-2, 4.30 ERA) to take the mound this afternoon. Beam has been the starting pitcher in 18 games this season, accumulating a total of 98.1 innings. During this time, he has surrendered 100 hits and 25 walks, while striking out 92 batters.
Beam’s performance this season has been a roller coaster ride, but in his latest game against North Carolina on Sunday, he showcased his skills impressively. He allowed only one run, four hits, and two walks while striking out seven in five innings.
The Vols’ exceptional effort led them to a 6-1 victory against the Tar Heels, resulting in a 2-0 start in Omaha. Should he replicate a similar performance, Tennessee’s chances of securing their first national title could be prolonged for an additional day.
Despite starting SEC play, Beam has been unable to string together back-to-back starts where he allows less than three runs. Although the Vols have been able to compensate with their strong offense, if Beam performs poorly like he did against Evansville in the super regionals (4.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, BB, 5 K), it could potentially result in the end of Tennessee’s season.
With the impressive performance of the Vols in 2024, it’s highly likely that they will secure a Monday matchup for the championship, instilling a sense of confidence.
In recent years, it has become common for the CWS finals to go the maximum three games. Out of the last nine editions of the CWS, seven of them saw the title series go three games, with the exceptions being the 2017 finals between Florida and LSU, and the 2022 finals between Ole Miss and Oklahoma.
Nevertheless, in terms of value, the Aggies emerge as the logical choice. While the Vols hold the top spot in the nation and possess formidable hitting power that can strike fear into any opponent.
However, it is unfathomable that A&M should be considered such a significant underdog, particularly considering their 1-0 lead, consistent pitching performances in Omaha, and superior bullpen quality. Even if they fail to secure the victory today, I have no regrets in supporting a +200 underdog in this situation.
