Sunday Night Baseball, Mets vs Cubs: Prediction & Best Bets (6/23)

Tonight on ESPN, the Cubs and Mets are set to clash at Wrigley Field in Chicago for the ultimate showdown to determine the winner of this series. With the series currently tied at one game each, this nationally televised Sunday Night game holds significant importance. In game 1, the Mets emerged victorious, decimating the Cubs with a resounding 11-1 win, scoring all 12 runs in the initial four innings. However, in a complete reversal of fortunes, last night witnessed the Cubs seizing control with a commanding 6-0 lead after only three innings. Consequently, Chicago emerged triumphant with an 8-1 victory, effectively leveling the series at one apiece.

Currently, the regular season series is deadlocked at 3-3. Therefore, the team that emerges victorious in tonight’s game will also clinch the overall season series win. Both the Mets and Cubs occupy the 4th position in their respective divisions. However, the Cubs have a stronger chance of surpassing their competitors as they are only 7 games behind the 1st place team.

Will the Cubbies secure their second consecutive victory at Wrigley, or will the Mets manage to steal a surprising win?

Can the Mets Stay Hot Against the Cubs on the Road?

Luis Severino performed poorly away from home against the Rangers.

Despite losing two out of their last three games, the Mets were previously on a winning streak of seven games and had emerged victorious in 11 out of their last 13. However, their upcoming challenge lies in facing the Cubs at their own home ground, where the Cubs have a home record of 22-17 this season. Although Luis Severino had a difficult recent outing, it is worth noting that he performed admirably against the Cubs in April.

Severino had an impressive performance in late April when he faced the Cubs, pitching 8 innings and only allowing 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 5 batters. However, his recent outing against the Rangers was quite disappointing. In that game, he pitched 6.1 innings and gave up 6 runs on 8 hits, including 2 home runs. It’s worth noting that he has surrendered home runs in his last two starts and has allowed earned runs in all but one of his starts this season. Despite these setbacks, Severino will be taking on the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

The Mets have emerged as one of the top-performing hitting teams on away games this season, however, Javier Assad has shown consistent performance lately. Despite not securing a win since mid-May, Assad delivered an impressive performance against the Mets in a game that the Cubs ultimately lost. In that game, he pitched exceptionally well, allowing only one run on five hits over five innings, without issuing a single walk. Assad has faced formidable lineups throughout the year, so I believe he should have little concern when facing the Mets at Wrigley.

Best Bet: Cubs ML (-108) BetOnline

Tonight, we have decided to back the Cubs at Wrigley Field against Severino, feeling confident despite the risks. Severino had a rough outing against the Rangers, and while he did perform well against the Cubs lineup in the past, that was quite a while ago. It’s always tougher for a pitcher when facing a team for the second time, as the hitters become more familiar with their strategies. This could potentially be a pivotal moment for the Cubs.

Chicago had a strong start in the NL Central, being only one game behind the leader. However, they have fallen behind and are now seven games back in fourth place. Their performance has been declining for the past month, but they have managed to win three out of their last four games. As they play their final home game before a month-long road trip, I believe the Cubs will be motivated to give their hometown fans something to cheer for, especially considering they will face the formidable Phillies upon their return.

Once again, I’ll take the bait for the Cubs at home as this line is undeniably the best on the market.
