Last week, the Ottawa Senators Community Foundation was fortunate to receive a generous contribution in the shape of 1000 hockey sticks. These sticks were subsequently distributed by the foundation to two esteemed charities: Their Opportunity and Tim Hortons Camps.

Their Opportunity is a charitable organization with a vision to empower, educate, and provide support to children in overcoming obstacles through the power of sports and generosity.

Children from low-income families and backgrounds, who would otherwise have limited access to fun and educational camp experiences, are provided with such amenities through Tim Hortons Camps.

The donation was sourced from Graeme Roustan, who is the owner of the sole hockey stick factory in Canada and also the publisher of The Hockey News. Roustan’s passion for hockey developed during his childhood, where he actively played the sport. Recognizing that not all children have the means to acquire the necessary equipment, including hockey sticks, he empathizes with their situation.

Instead of claiming credit for the donation, Roustan provided a modest explanation for his actions. He clarified, “My mother, Ivy Draper, resided in Carleton Place for thirty-five years until she sadly passed away in 2022. She instilled in me the values of giving back to the community, so all recognition and gratitude should be directed towards Mom.”

Regardless of who deserves the credit, Roustan or his mother, their generous donation will ensure that 1000 individuals will have the opportunity to access hockey sticks and experience all the advantages that come with participating in the sport of hockey.

In response to Roustan’s donation, the Ottawa Senators Community Foundation released a statement.

We are grateful for this generous gift, as it aligns perfectly with our mission of empowering underserved youth to unlock their full potential. The Senators Community Foundation aims to collaborate with partners in order to provide support and resources to children and young individuals, enabling them to acquire the necessary skills to succeed. We firmly believe that young people possess innate problem-solving abilities, and all they require is an opportunity to showcase their talents. Through our partnerships with organizations like Tim Hortons and Their Opportunity, we are confident that young individuals can develop resilience, strength, and essential social and emotional skills, which are crucial for their personal growth. As the Sens Community Foundation places great importance on promoting wellness through sports and activities, we are thrilled to receive this gift, which further strengthens our commitment to this cause.
