With over a month passed since the start of the 2024 WNBA season and nearly three months left in the regular season, it appears that only a superhuman effort could prevent A’ja Wilson from securing the prestigious title of WNBA MVP this year.
Out of the 27 seasons in the WNBA, a total of 16 players have been honored with the title of Most Valuable Player. Wilson, who received the prestigious MVP recognition in both 2020 and 2022, stands among a select group of eight players who have won the award on multiple occasions.
Among the eight individuals mentioned, Sheryl Swoopes (2000, 2002, 2005), Lisa Leslie (2001, 2004, 2006), and Lauren Jackson (2003, 2007, 2010) hold the unique distinction of being three-time winners in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
In a few months’ time, that group will welcome a new member if Wilson’s remarkable start to this season persists.
The Las Vegas Aces, led by Wilson, have already experienced six losses, equaling the total number of games they lost throughout the entire regular season of 2023.
However, the ex-South Carolina standout has significantly contributed to the success of the reigning two-time WNBA champions. As they prepare to face off against the Chicago Sky, featuring WNBA Rookie of the Year contender Angel Reese, Wilson currently holds the top position in the league for scoring (27.8 PPG) and rebounding (11.6 RPG). Additionally, she ranks second in blocks (2.4 BPG), and places sixth in steals (1.9 SPG) and field-goal percentage (52.4%).
In this season, numerous outstanding performers and performances have emerged. However, Wilson has taken a commanding lead in the race for the WNBA MVP award, thanks to her extraordinary level of play. She is on track to achieve a truly historic and record-breaking season.

Diana Taurasi achieved an average of 25.3 PPG during the 2006 season, ultimately securing the scoring title. Until now, no other player in the history of the WNBA has managed to maintain a season average of 25.0 or higher PPG.
Wilson will break Taurasi’s record and become the first WNBA player to score 1000 points in a single season if she participates in all 40 games this season and maintains an average of 24.1 PPG over the final 26 games.
Despite her impressive performance, she is also very close to breaking the single season rebounding record. This record is currently held by Sylvia Fowles, who achieved an average of 11.88 rebounds per game in 2018, slightly surpassing the 11.85 RPG achieved by Jonquel Jones the previous year.
Wilson will break Fowles’s record if she maintains a slightly above 12 rebounds per game for the remainder of the season, playing in every game.
Her ability to chase both records demonstrates her exceptional performance this season.
Up until now, Wilson has achieved a minimum of 21 points and eight rebounds in her performances. She has recorded four games with 30 points and four games with at least 25 points and 15 rebounds. In her most recent game against the Sun, she had an impressive performance of 26 points and 16 rebounds.
Alyssa Thomas, Connecticut Sun (+900)
2024 Season Stats for Thomas (16 games): 12.4 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 7.7 APG, 1.7 SPG, 51.7% FG, 65.8% FT
Thomas had her most successful WNBA season to date last year, maintaining an impressive average of 15.5 points per game (PPG), 9.9 rebounds per game (RPG), and 7.9 assists per game (APG).
Despite the overall decline in numbers this season, she played a pivotal role in leading the Sun to a remarkable 9-0 and 13-1 start.
Since her impressive triple-double performance against the Fever at the beginning of the season, Thomas has come close to achieving another triple-double multiple times. She has been just one rebound, one assist, two points, or a combination of one rebound and one assist away from achieving this feat on various occasions.
The Sun highly value her versatility as they strive to overcome the championship hurdle this season. However, will she be able to match Wilson’s performance and make significant progress in the WNBA MVP race?
Napheesa Collier, Minnesota Lynx (+900)
2024 Season Stats for Collier (17 games): 21.4 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 3.5 APG, 2.2 SPG, 1.4 BPG, 46.9% FG, 30.8% 3PT, 81.1% FT
Despite the Lynx experiencing another disappointing season in 2023, Collier emerged as a standout player with impressive individual statistics, averaging 21.5 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game, and 2.5 assists per game.
Despite Collier’s impressive performance of 29 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists, the Minnesota Lynx were defeated by the Dallas Wings today. However, the Lynx have regained their position in the top tier of the WNBA standings, and Collier has seamlessly carried on her excellent form from the previous season.
In her recent game against Dallas, Collier achieved her tenth double-double of the season, just one less than what she accomplished in 37 games last season. This remarkable feat came only two days after her outstanding performance of 21 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals, which played a crucial role in the Lynx’s victory over the New York Liberty in the Commissioner’s Cup final. Collier’s exceptional display throughout the Commissioner’s Cup earned her the title of MVP.
While there will be no runner-up accolades for the player who may come in second to Wilson in the WNBA MVP race, Collier is steadily progressing towards her second consecutive All-WNBA First Team recognition, along with her fourth invitation to the All-Star game.
Breanna Stewart, New York Liberty (+2500)

Is it possible for the previous season’s MVP to make a significant impact in the current season’s competition?
During her debut season in New York, Stewart achieved an impressive average of 23.0 PPG (her best performance to date), 9.3 RPG, and 3.8 APG (another career high). As a result, she surpassed Wilson to claim the prestigious WNBA MVP title.
Stewart has achieved eight double-doubles this season, along with an impressive performance of 24 points and 11 rebounds in the Liberty’s Commissioner’s Cup final defeat against the Lynx. Additionally, she has reached the remarkable milestone of scoring 30 points on three separate occasions.
However, it is worth noting that she has had six occasions where she scored less than 15 points, and her performance in outside shooting has been noticeably subpar compared to our usual expectations. Throughout her first seven seasons in the WNBA, her lowest season shooting percentage from the perimeter was 33.3%, achieved in the year 2021.
However, her current overall shooting percentage is second only to her 2018 performance, where she shot at an impressive 52.9%, leading her to win her first WNBA MVP and championship.
Sooner or later, she will improve her outside shot, and it is highly probable that her scoring average will soon surpass the 20.0 PPG mark.
In addition to her, teammate Ionescu (19.3 PPG, 6.7 APG, 4.3 RPG) is also a strong contender for the WNBA MVP title. She is currently on track to achieve personal bests in scoring and assists and has been performing exceptionally well recently with an impressive average of 27.0 PPG, 9.7 APG, 53.7% FG, and 48.3% 3PT in her last three games.
