The Avalanche development camp this summer exuded a sense of championship ambiance.

Participating in this week’s camp were three key players from the 2024 University of Denver Pioneers team that clinched the National Championship. These players include defensemen Sean Behrens and Boston Buckberger, as well as goaltender Matt Davis.

“When I attended Dev Camp during my first year at DU, I was under the impression that there were many DU players here, as there were three of us,” Behrens stated. “However, this year, we have a total of five DU players.”

Behrens commended his teammates and expressed his excitement at witnessing their progression to a higher level with their skills.

“They put in the effort to get here and earn a chance. Therefore, I believe they desire to witness their success unfold, not just in their own eyes but also in mine. It’s personally gratifying for me to observe their progress and growth.”

Having completed 112 games and securing two National Championships, Behrens spoke highly of his experience at DU.

Behrens expressed his gratitude for the coaching staff at DU, stating that they excel in various aspects such as skill development, pre-game preparation, and instilling good habits both on and off the rink. He believes that their guidance and resources have been instrumental in his growth as both a player and an individual. Behrens acknowledges that his current position would not have been possible without his three years at DU and he is immensely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the program.

Davis, who was granted his inaugural development-camp invitation following an astonishing NCAA Tournament where he achieved a .979 save percentage, expressed his excitement about joining a team situated in close proximity to his college.

Davis expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It’s incredible! It’s so convenient not having to go far, and there’s a comforting sense of familiarity in attending games and spotting them around the rink. Plus, we even had the opportunity to play a game at Ball Arena last year and have been in the dressing room!”

Davis, who is attending his inaugural development camp, revealed that he has sought guidance from Behrens.

Davis admitted, “I had limited knowledge about what to anticipate. I heavily relied on Sean for guidance on matters such as packing essentials and what to prepare for, just to ensure I was as ready as possible. He has been an immense support.”

Behrens is making the most of this development camp as he prepares for his inaugural full professional season.

Behrens emphasized the abundance of resources available, whether it’s on the ice, off the ice, or in the weight room. He mentioned that the entire organization and staff are present, providing ample opportunities to seek assistance, ask questions, and receive support.

The connection between the University of Denver and the Colorado Avalanche is strengthening, as DU alumnus Logan O’Connor continues to make an impact on the Avalanche roster. Furthermore, the pipeline between DU and the Avalanche is expanding, as both 2024 fourth-round pick Jake Fisher and 2024 sixth-round pick Tory Pitner have committed to play for the Pioneers in the upcoming season.
