2024 MLB MVP Odds and AL & NL MVP Favorites for This Season

Throughout the majority of the 2023 season, the MLB MVP competitions seemed quite clear-cut. Shohei Ohtani emerged as the frontrunner in the American League, ultimately claiming the title. Similarly, Ronald Acuna Jr. maintained a consistent lead in the National League, ultimately securing the victory.

Similar to the Cy Young Award, there won’t be a back-to-back MVP winner this year. Ohtani made a move from the AL to the NL by joining the Los Angeles Dodgers during the offseason. On the other hand, Acuna unfortunately experienced his second season-ending ACL tear in just four seasons. Last year, he tore his right ACL right before the All-Star break, and this season, he tore his left ACL on May 30th while playing against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

As Ohtani continues to dominate the Senior Circuit and Acuna remains out until 2025, the question arises: Who has the potential to win the MVP awards this season? As we reach mid-June and teams have played around or over 70 games, the MVP races in the 2024 MLB season seem to be shaping up similarly to 2023, with clear frontrunners emerging.

In the AL and NL Cy Young races, the field of candidates is somewhat deep still in both leagues. If you look at the latest Cy Young odds at BetOnline, there are 18 AL pitchers with odds of +7500 or better, and in the NL, there are 18 pitchers with odds of +8000 or better.

However, when it comes to the MVP races, the pool of contenders is more limited. In the American League, there are merely eight MVP hopefuls who possess odds of +10000 or higher. Meanwhile, in the National League, there are just twelve MVP hopefuls with odds of +8000 or higher.

Who Are the Top MLB MVP Favorites This Season?

American League MVP Favorites

Aaron Judge (-120)

2024 Season Stats for Judge (73 games): .299 BA, 26 HR, 64 RBI, 56 R, .425 OBP, .686 SLG, 1.110 OPS, 5.1 WAR

In 2022, Judge achieved a new record for home runs in the American League. However, he faced several injury concerns and could only play in 106 games during the previous season. Despite this setback, he managed to hit an impressive 37 home runs, falling just seven short of Ohtani’s leading total of 44 in the AL.

In the beginning of this season, Judge, who was in good health, had a terrible start, achieving a batting average of just .178 along with four home runs and 13 RBI in his initial 27 games.

However, torrid has now taken the place of horrid. In his previous 46 games, Judge has smashed 22 home runs and delivered 51 runs batted in. If he were to maintain this performance throughout an entire season, he would accumulate a staggering 77 homers and 180 RBI. Furthermore, his batting average has skyrocketed by over 120 points due to his impressive .374 average (61 hits in 163 at-bats) during this period.

Is it possible for him to match or exceed the 62 home runs he achieved in 2022? It would require an exceptional amount of effort, but even if he gets close, it will be difficult for anyone to outperform him and win the AL MVP award.

Juan Soto (+400)

2024 Season Stats for Soto (71 games): .315 BA, 18 HR, 55 RBI, 58 R, .433 OBP, .592 SLG, 1.025 OPS, 4.1 WAR

Is there a chance that Soto will continue playing for the Yankees after 2024? It is highly likely that he may decide to sign a lucrative contract to stay in the Bronx for a long time. However, if his tenure is limited to just one year, let’s appreciate the incredible performance of Soto and Judge as a duo while we still have the opportunity.

Soto’s performance took a dip after his impressive .313 batting average during his 2021 NL MVP runner-up season. From 2022 to 2023, while playing for the Nationals and Padres, he recorded a .259 average over 315 games.

Since moving to the Big Apple and joining the American League, he has regained his hitting prowess from 2020 and 2021. In his initial four games with the Yankees, he achieved an impressive nine hits in 17 at-bats, boasting a batting average of .529. Although it was evident that such a remarkable performance couldn’t be maintained, he has consistently displayed impressive statistics throughout each month.

  • March: .529 BA (9 for 17)
  • April: .290 (29 for 100), 7 HR, 21 RBI
  • May: .296 (32 for 108), 7 HR, 24 RBI
  • June: .343 (12 for 35), 3 HR, 6 RBI

Gunnar Henderson (+500)

2024 Season Stats for Henderson (70 games): .274 BA, 22 HR, 49 RBI, 56 R, .370 OBP, .588 SLG, .957 OPS, 5.0 WAR

In the previous season, Henderson earned the title of AL Rookie of the Year due to his impressive performance. He achieved a batting average of .255, with 29 doubles, nine triples, and 25 home runs. Additionally, he attained 82 RBI and scored 100 runs throughout 150 games.

If Henderson manages to maintain his good health throughout this season, he will surpass those numbers by significant margins. Additionally, he has successfully stolen nine bases out of nine attempts. Is it possible for him to achieve a season with 50 home runs and 20 stolen bases?

Bobby Witt Jr. (+550)

2024 Season Stats for Witt (73 games): .327 BA, 19 2B, 7 3B, 11 HR, 51 RBI, 59 R, 21-29 SB, .377 OBP, .551 SLG, .928 OPS, 4.3 WAR

Witt’s visibility and potential to become a top AL MVP contender throughout the season are further enhanced by the fact that the Royals, currently holding a record of 41-32, continue to secure victories.

He is definitely fulfilling his role, which includes occupying the top spot in both AL and MLB batting average charts, surpassing the highly productive Luis Arraez.

Witt is on track to become one of baseball’s prominent figures for the next decade and beyond. However, he is fast-tracking this process by contributing significantly to the Royals’ ascent in the standings this season.

National League MVP Favorites

Shohei Ohtani (+170)

2024 Season Stats for Ohtani (70 games): .309 BA, 19 HR, 46 RBI, 53 R, 15-16 SB, .382 OBP, .594 SLG, .976 OPS, 3.5 WAR

Since Mookie Betts, the previous frontrunner, has been sidelined indefinitely with a fractured hand from a pitch he got hit by on Sunday, Ohtani has emerged as the leading candidate for the NL MVP title.

Due to elbow surgery, the two-time AL MVP will not be pitching this season. Nevertheless, Ohtani’s exceptional skills as a hitter alone make him a strong contender for the NL MVP title, even without any advantage from being a pitcher.

It should be mentioned that his batting average in June is a mere .241, significantly lower than his impressive .352 in April and .312 in May. However, it is important to acknowledge that he has the potential to excel at any moment, and it appears that he might be on the verge of a breakout after hitting two home runs against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. This marks his second time this season achieving a multi-homer performance.

Bryce Harper (+300)

2024 Season Stats for Harper (66 games): .280 BA, 15 HR, 46 RBI, 41 R, .390 OBP, .519 SLG, .908 OPS, 2.7 WAR

At this juncture, it is unsurprising that Harper, who plays for the top team in the National League, is considered one of the favorites for the NL MVP title due to his exceptional performance.

However, it is likely that he will need to go on a significant winning streak at some stage to surpass Ohtani, even if the Phillies maintain their status as the team with the best record in the NL.

Fernando Tatis Jr. (+700)

2024 Season Stats for Tatis (75 games): .272 BA, 13 HR, 35 RBI, 48 R, .348 OBP, .459 SLG, .808 OPS, 1.8 WAR

Despite playing for two of the top teams in MLB, Ohtani and Harper, Tatis’s Padres have a record that falls short of .500. Furthermore, Tatis’s performance this season does not match up to the impressive numbers achieved by Ohtani and Harper.

Nonetheless, his statistics are on the rise just at the perfect moment to potentially take advantage of Betts’ injury. Throughout June, Tatis has maintained an impressive .350 batting average (21 for 60), along with five doubles, four home runs, and six runs batted in. However, it is worth noting that he struggled during San Diego’s series against the New York Mets this past weekend, managing only one hit in twelve at-bats.

Freddie Freeman (+900)

2024 Season Stats for Freeman (73 games): .300 BA, 10 HR, 43 RBI, 45 R, .401 OBP, .502 SLG, .903 OPS, 2.7 WAR

Freeman’s own MVP candidacy might be influenced by having two other prominent NL MVP contenders batting ahead of him.

The 2020 NL MVP remains in top form this season, and as long as he continues to perform as we’re used to seeing, particularly in hitting, he will maintain a significant position in the race.

Currently, he is performing that task quite impressively. In May, his batting average was a mediocre .267, but in June, he has significantly improved by hitting .360 (18 for 50), including four home runs and ten runs batted in.
