Andrew Cogliano and Pavel Francouz Begin New Chapters of Their Careers With Avalanche

Cogliano serves as a Special Assistant to the General Manager, while Francouz assumes the role of Goaltender Scout.

The 2024 Colorado Avalanche Development Camp saw the return of some well-known figures. Andrew Cogliano and Pavel Francouz, who both have Stanley Cup Championships under their belts, assumed leadership positions within the organization. Throughout the week-long camp, they provided valuable guidance to the aspiring young talents, assisting them in honing their skills. Cogliano now serves as a Special Assistant to General Manager Chris MacFarland, while Francouz works as a Goaltending Scout.

Cogliano expressed, “Winning a championship alongside a team instills an immense passion and fosters a deep sense of loyalty.”

In 2022, both individuals proudly held up the cup, donning the burgundy and blue attire. Furthermore, they both revealed their retirements during this season.

After remaining undefeated with a 6-0-0 record during the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Francouz declared his retirement in April. This decision came after he was unable to participate in the entire 2023-24 season due to an injury.

Cogliano Takes on Permanent Role

Cogliano, who accumulated 464 points (190 goals and 274 assists) in 1,294 regular-season games and 40 points (13 goals and 27 assists) in 131 playoff games over a span of 17 seasons, decided to retire from professional hockey in May. Shortly after, he became a part of the Avalanche front office. In his new role, he will contribute to different areas of the front office, such as pro and amateur scouting, player development, and also collaborate with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles.

Cogliano expressed his belief that there is a life beyond hockey, acknowledging that one cannot play the sport indefinitely. He expressed gratitude for the chance to play for a few years, win a championship, and be a valuable member of successful teams. Transitioning to the front office now presents him with an opportunity to experience the sport from a different perspective and potentially achieve victory once more. Being involved in this journey holds great significance for him.

Cogliano underscored the exhilarating nature of the busy transition, attributing it to the presence of the Draft, free agency, and Development Camp.

Cogliano expressed his belief that being in management provides an excellent opportunity for learning. He acknowledged the presence of exceptional individuals to gain knowledge from and considered himself fortunate to be in such a position.

Cogliano expressed his notable enthusiasm for the scouting aspect of his new role amidst his various other jobs.

Cogliano expressed his longstanding fascination with scouting and gaining a different perspective from observing players from a higher vantage point, rather than being on the ice. He eagerly anticipated the opportunity to accompany our scouts, Chris, or anyone else, to NHL and professional games to gain insights into the importance of observation and learn how to identify specific aspects of the game.

Francouz Stays in Touch With Organization

Francouz, who retired in April, revealed that he had been actively involved in scouting during the previous season, lending support to the team in compiling its Draft list. Recognizing that he would not be participating in the 2023-24 season, he engaged in a conversation with Avalanche’s Director of Goaltending Evaluation/Special Projects, Craig Billington.

Francouz recounted, “He informed me about their objective and plans – to enhance the goalie position’s depth. He offered me an opportunity to assist with scouting, and that’s when everything began. This operation persisted throughout the entire season, as we diligently compiled the list for the Draft.”

Billington extended an invitation to Francouz to join the young goalies at the 2024 development camp, a proposition that he gladly welcomed.

A different perspective is gained by Francouz as he transitions from playing to scouting.

According to Francouz, “Even during my time on the bench, observing other goalies has honed my perspective. This advantage simplifies matters for me since I understand their techniques and actions.”

In the 2024 NHL Draft, the Avalanche made a decision to pick three goaltenders. Among them, Francouz expressed keen interest in closely observing Louka Cloutier, who was chosen in the fifth round.

Francouz stated, “I have watched countless videos of him. It seems like I have a better understanding of him than even his own parents.”

Francouz referred to his experience with the Avalanche as the most remarkable period in his life and expressed that Colorado holds a unique significance.

Francouz expressed his joy in being able to maintain a connection with Colorado and the Avalanche, stating that he is thoroughly enjoying his new role.
