In the upcoming rematch against Josh Taylor on Saturday night (May 25) in Leeds, Jack Catterall firmly asserts that emotions will not influence his performance.
After a span of two years, the two super-lightweights reunite at the First Direct Arena, following one of the most controversial judges’ rulings in recent memory. Back in Glasgow, on that February evening, Taylor emerged victorious through a split decision. The aftermath was filled with intense emotions, as heated and hostile exchanges erupted online between both sides.
Catterall and Taylor’s disdain for one another surfaced again during two recent press conferences in Edinburgh and Manchester to promote the fight. The Englishman told Boxing News, however, that emotion will not take over in the ring on Saturday and affect his performance.
Catterall emphasized his approach to fighting, stating, “I rely on careful calculation and being mentally alert. However, I must acknowledge that there has been an emotional buildup. Strong emotions have been expressed and it’s important to separate them, fight strategically, and ensure that they don’t interfere with my performance.”
Catterall, 28-1 (13 KOs), has barely put a foot wrong in his two fights since then against Darragh Foley and Jorge Linares, respectively. Matchroom, who promote Catterall, holds many of the aces in the super-lightweight division, and the 30-year-old can be sure of another big fight in the future should he beat Taylor. However, should ‘El Gato’ emerge victorious and the rematch be a far more fan-friendly encounter than the first, then a trilogy bout could be another option for him.
Catterall attributed it all to the broadcasters, specifically DAZN and Matchroom.
“If they consider it an explosive and powerful fight, we will have a rematch, even a trilogy. However, at the moment, my main focus is on defeating him this Saturday. I intend to conclude that chapter and avoid discussing Josh any further.”
