After enduring a series of frustrating weeks, NASCAR Cup Series star Denny Hamlin finally has an opportunity to leave all that behind as he takes the pole position at the Ally 400, taking place at Nashville Superspeedway today (3:30 pm ET, NBC).
Over the past few weeks, Hamlin’s regular season championship hopes took a big hit. After finishing in the top five in five consecutive races, he finished 38th in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway, 34th in the Iowa Corn 350 at Iowa Speedway, and 24th in last week’s USA Today 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Consequently, he finds himself trailing Hendrick Motorsports teammates Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott by 40 points in the current NASCAR Cup Series points standings, entering this week’s race.

Therefore, every race leading up to the highly anticipated regular season finale at Darlington on August 24th at 7:30 pm ET on NBC will hold immense significance.

Ally 400 Predictions & Picks
In last season’s Ally 400, Chastain held off Truex and Hamlin to pick up the first of his two 2023 wins.
Chastain, who also won the season-ending race at Phoenix, has yet to win this season and has only two top-five finishes. But thanks to avoiding disaster for the most part, he is in a comfortable position in the playoff race. Only twice thus far has he finished outside of the top 20, coming in 21st at the Daytona 500 and 32nd in the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Chastain will start 20th today, but he is someone I have my eye on for a top-10 finish. I’d love to see his odds a bit shorter than -125 (at Bovada), but I’m locking him in anyway.
Although Chastain has consistently held a position within the top 20, William Byron’s season has been rather peculiar.
Byron is tied for the series lead with three wins and has ten top-10 finishes. But he has also finished outside of the top 20 five times, including a 26th-place finish last week.
Can the #24 car make a comeback at the Ally 400? Starting in seventh position, he has odds of +240 to finish in the top five and -150 to finish in the top ten. Although the latter option may not seem as appealing due to the higher risk, I personally feel confident in choosing it because Byron rarely has back-to-back poor performances. It may seem contradictory to hesitate on Chastain but have more faith in Byron at lower odds, but I have greater certainty in Byron at -150 compared to Chastain at -125.

Berry, aiming for a remarkable fifth top-ten finish in seven races, will be joining Hamlin on the front row this afternoon. According to Bovada, his odds of achieving this feat are -115.
Berry’s future hangs in the balance as Stewart-Haas Racing faces an imminent closure. However, the rookie has managed to make a strong case for himself with his recent performances. Just last week in Loudon, he matched his season-best finish, coming in third place. Based on this, I believe he will continue to ride the wave of positivity and secure more impressive finishes this week.
My top choice for the Ally 400 is Buescher (+115) to secure a spot in the top ten. Although he has only achieved this feat three times in the last 11 races, he impressively finished fifth last week and will begin today’s race in ninth position. Buescher has a tendency to surprise with strong finishes, especially when expectations are low. In fact, it wouldn’t be astonishing if he secures a playoff spot with a victory today.
Speaking of the victory, with four finishing position picks this week, I’m not overly invested in making an Ally 400 winner pick. With that in mind, I’m going to roll with a few low-risk, high-reward picks with Bowman (who will start 12th), Buescher, and Byron.
