Highlights! 18-year-old Japanese kickboxer transitions to Muay Thai, knocks out pound-for-pound king in second fight

While Ryuki Matsuda may not be familiar to many western audiences, fight fans should consider acquainting themselves with his name.

After gaining experience on Japan’s amateur circuit, the 18-year-old kickboxer honed his skills by participating in numerous bouts, emerging victorious in the majority of them. In 2021, he made the leap to the professional stage, amassing an impressive 11-0 record. However, he decided to venture into the realm of Muay Thai, where his inaugural match pitted him against Issei Ishii, another kickboxer from Japan. Their encounter ended in a draw.

In his second Muay Thai match, Matsuda’s draw didn’t hinder his progress as he bravely confronted Khunsueklek, the reigning Rajadamnern Stadium Bantamweight champion (118 lbs). This championship holds immense prestige within the realm of Muay Thai. Despite being only 18 years old, Khunsueklek boasted an extraordinary record of 81 wins, 7 losses, and 3 draws. Furthermore, he had successfully defended his title in 41 consecutive fights, earning him high rankings in the pound-for-pound lists.

Matsuda’s agility and formidable punching ability proved overwhelming for the seasoned champion, ultimately leading to a second-round knockout victory for the talented Japanese athlete. This remarkable upset win is likely just the start of a highly successful combat sports career for the promising young kickboxer.
