Tonight, the Phillies are set to play as the top-ranked team in the Majors. However, their recent performance has lacked consistency. Over the past few weeks, they have been alternating wins and losses, resulting in a 9-9 record in their last 18 games.

One of the big reasons behind Philadelphia’s recent back-and-forth play is injuries. Two of the Phillies’ top bats — Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper — are currently on the 10-day injured list and won’t be back until the weekend at the earliest. Regardless of how good the rest of the roster is, not having Schwarber and Harper for any stretch hurts.

The Phillies can take solace in the fact that the Cubs are currently struggling. Despite starting June with a somewhat decent record, Chicago has fallen seven games below .500 after a disappointing 2-6 stretch in their last eight games. Even though five of those losses occurred while playing away, returning home doesn’t seem to be a solution either.

In their recent seven home games, the Cubs have a record of 3 wins and 4 losses. Additionally, the Cubs have struggled against NL East teams this season with a record of 7 wins and 10 losses, while the Phillies have had success against NL Central clubs with a record of 12 wins and 8 losses.

The Cubs haven’t experienced much success against NL East clubs this season.

Recently, Chicago has been quite unfortunate in their matches against Philadelphia. The Cubs have been unable to secure a victory in their last five encounters with the Phillies, with an average deficit of 3.8 runs in each game.

To maintain their momentum, the Phillies will heavily rely on Michael Mercado, who is set to make his inaugural MLB start. The 25-year-old right-handed pitcher has showcased impressive skills in Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season, boasting a record of 1-1, an outstanding 2.28 ERA, and an impressive 44 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings over 14 appearances, 10 of which were starts.
