San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Mike Grier announced today that the club has signed defenseman Ty Emberson to a one-year contract worth $950,000.

Grier described Ty as a dependable defenseman who excels at defending from his own zone by using his physicality to challenge opponents and maintain control of the puck. Additionally, Ty demonstrates his effectiveness in penalty kill situations and maintains a disciplined approach to his on-ice performance.

In the 2023-24 season, Emberson, who was 24 years old at the time, participated in 30 games for the Sharks. Throughout the season, he accumulated a total of 10 points, which included one goal and nine assists. Emberson’s debut in the NHL took place on October 21 against Nashville, where he contributed his first NHL point by assisting a teammate. Later, on October 29 against Washington, he registered his first NHL goal. Finally, on November 25, Emberson scored his initial NHL goal in a game against Vancouver.

From January 2nd to January 6th, the defenseman achieved an impressive three-game point streak solely consisting of assists. Additionally, out of the 10 points he obtained throughout the season, nine were earned in the last 18 games he played before unfortunately encountering a season-ending lower-body injury on February 29th.

Before joining the Sharks, Emberson played in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Tucson Roadrunners and Hartford Wolf Pack during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons respectively. In the 2022-23 season, he was the second-highest scoring defenseman for the Wolf Pack, recording 27 points (seven goals, 20 assists) in 69 games. Throughout his AHL career, Emberson has accumulated a total of 39 points (12 goals, 27 assists) in 132 games.

During his time in college, he played for the University of Wisconsin and served as the team captain during the 2020-21 season. Throughout the season, he participated in 31 games, contributing 13 points through four goals and nine assists. His superb performance earned him a place on the Big 10 All-Tournament Team, as Wisconsin secured the regular season championship. Throughout his four-year tenure in the NCAA, Emberson accumulated 34 points from nine goals and 25 assists in a total of 101 games.

Emberson proudly represented Team USA on the international stage at both the 2020 World Junior Championship, participating in five games, and the 2018 U-18 World Junior Championship, where his exceptional skills contributed to the team’s achievement of a Silver Medal.

The six-foot-two, 193-pound Eau Claire, Wisconsin native was claimed by San Jose off waivers from the New York Rangers on Sept. 30, 2023. He was originally selected by Arizona in the 2018 NHL Draft (third round, 73^rd overall).
