Eddie Jordan has further elaborated on the story behind his journey to becoming Adrian Newey’s manager.
Eddie Jordan has spoken more about how he became Adrian Newey’s manager, after he helped negotiate an early exit from the design great’s Red Bull contract.
The team’s press release announcing Newey’s departure caused surprise as he expressed gratitude towards Jordan, his “close friend and manager.” However, for many, it was the first time they were made aware of Jordan’s involvement in Newey’s professional matters.
Eddie Jordan expands on long-standing Adrian Newey friendship
Despite acknowledging that they are distinct individuals, Jordan expressed that their mutual passion for music has strengthened their bond and fostered a friendship that has endured for many years.
During his appearance on the Formula For Success podcast, Jordan was questioned about the origins of his role as Newey’s manager. He delved into the intricacies of the strong relationship he has nurtured with the designer over the course of several years. He further elaborated on the gradual transformation of the inquiries directed at him, as they evolved over time.
Jordan explained that he believes credit should be given to Ian Phillips, who served as Adrian’s team principal during their time at Leyton House in the late 80s.
I used to feel somewhat hesitant about being in charge of him since Adrian is incredibly smart. I often wonder if I should even be in his presence.
He appears different to me due to our contrasting perspectives, but our shared passion for music is possibly the only thing we have in common. Deep down, he embodies a true rockstar.

Over the course of time, he would express his thoughts saying, “Ah, Eddie, I am displeased with this, or I adore that, or I contemplate that, and what about this?”, and then we would embark on a sailing adventure. Afterwards, you would remark, “You know, I truly enjoy this; it provides a pleasant escape from the chaos of motor racing that is driving me insane.”
It’s important to keep in mind that he has already won a total of 25 World Championships for both drivers and teams. Considering Max’s current performance, I confidently predict that he will increase this number even further this year. It’s worth noting that he is still an integral part of the Red Bull team as we speak.
“And he is absolutely determined to make sure, when he does leave, it will be in a celebration – and so it should be, because of what he’s brought to every team that he’s worked with, from Leyton House, to Williams to McLaren, and then on to [Red Bull].
Nevertheless, my response to him would be, “Adrian, when you hold a pencil and gaze upon a drawing board, there is no one who can match your talent and skill. However, once you no longer hold that pencil, you become just like the rest of us.”
He chuckles slightly, though I suspect he may perceive my words as cheeky. However, I truly mean what I say – he is simply an ordinary individual.
However, there must be some exceptional intelligence at work within his brain on a consistent basis, as he consistently makes accurate predictions, especially when it comes to the upcoming rule changes.
Let me inform you that he possesses an exceptional talent for assessing how to exploit rules to his advantage, extracting the utmost benefit from them, and ensuring that the team inside the vehicle optimizes every possible opportunity he can achieve.
