New driver appears on Audi F1 radar if dream Carlos Sainz signing fails – report

There have been strong rumors connecting Carlos Sainz to a potential transfer to Audi.

A report has claimed that, if the Audi F1 operation cannot land Carlos Sainz, then Pierre Gasly may be an alternative signing for them.

One seat remains vacant as Nico Hulkenberg has already been confirmed to join Sauber next season on a multi-year contract, which will also cover the transition to Audi in 2026.

Could Pierre Gasly be an option for Audi F1?

A report from Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that, should Audi not sign Sainz, as has long been their stated aim for the start of their Formula 1 plan, then current Alpine driver Gasly is being weighed up as an option due to his apparent dissatisfaction with how his team are performing on track.

Alpine began the season with the least competitive car among all the teams. Despite their efforts to improve, Esteban Ocon managed to secure the team’s sole point of the year thus far in the recent Miami race.

Gasly clarified that as both Gasly and Ocon’s contracts expire this season, he is considering his next contract in light of the upcoming changes in Formula 1 regulations. These changes encompass alterations to both the chassis and power unit, set to take place in 2026.

“In my opinion, the overall perspective is that we recognize the car’s lack of quality. It is a fact that there are certain years when we manage to nail it, while in other years, we simply miss the mark,” Gasly expressed during his time in Miami, reflecting on the current season and addressing inquiries about his future prospects.

And in my opinion, the way we respond to it is crucial. I acknowledge that it may take some time. I cannot anticipate a significant transformation in a brief period, but I believe we now have sufficient data to accurately identify what is effective and what is not.

After considering the timeframe, the focus lies on determining our approach. With May quickly approaching, we must assess the current season’s prospects and what can be accomplished. Simultaneously, we need to plan for next year and even anticipate the extensive work needed for the entirely new car in ’26.

There are many factors to take into account, but I can observe all the factory processes. Ultimately, I understand that it will require time, but it is crucial for us to respond and not remain stagnant with our current insufficient competitiveness.

He stated that it would be foolish not to consider the impact of the 2026 power unit program on his decision-making process.

“It’s clear that this is a crucial matter, particularly at the moment, as I consider the future and strive to secure a competitive car for myself.”

Clearly, I am observing the progress without diverting my current focus on maximizing our present resources. However, I am closely monitoring this matter at the factory.
