Potential sticking point in Valtteri Bottas’ F1 future amid Mercedes return rumours

Valtteri Bottas has confirmed he would ideally like to resolve his F1 future by the summer break, which could rule out a potential return to Mercedes who seem prepared to play a waiting game to replace Lewis Hamilton.

Nico Hulkenberg’s confirmation at Sauber for 2025, followed by the team’s transition to Audi in the subsequent year, indicates that either Bottas or Zhou Guanyu will be departing the team by the conclusion of the 2024 F1 season. There is a possibility that both may leave, considering the availability of Carlos Sainz, who has garnered significant attention and interest.

Bottas, in a conversation with various media outlets, including PlanetF1.com, before the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, was questioned about his future in Formula 1. The accomplished driver, having won ten grand prix races, affirmed that he is currently engaged in discussions with several teams.

Bottas stated that there are ongoing discussions, indicating that the team is not hastily making any decisions.

“But yes, it’s clear that I am staying informed and keeping my team, who I already collaborate with, updated on the progress. That’s the current state of affairs. There haven’t been any new developments from Miami. The situation remains unchanged.”

“In a situation where you find yourself in the free market, you are constantly on the lookout. Lately, I have been exploring various directions instead of just one, as relying solely on one thing is not possible in this sport.”

“That’s the way it is. Therefore, there hasn’t been much change. Talks have been ongoing for a while now, heading in two distinct directions.”

“However, there is some progress being made. Nevertheless, I am not solely depending on one option, that’s for sure.”

After departing from Mercedes at the end of the 2021 season, Bottas joined his present employer, emphasizing the appeal of a multi-year agreement with a well-defined project, rather than constantly competing for one-year extensions at Mercedes.

Initially, Bottas expressed his disinterest in revisiting the era of one-year contracts.

“The type of contract I’m seeking is long-term because I wouldn’t want to join a team just for a year and be in F1 only to survive,” answered the Finn when questioned about his contract preferences.

“What I am seeking is a project that spans a considerable duration, encompassing well-defined objectives, and acknowledges and values my abilities and the outcomes I can provide. This aspect holds utmost significance for me.”

“The speed of the car is certainly important, but what truly matters is having reliable security for the future, enabling us to collaborate effectively towards achieving our set goals.”

Bottas found himself considering the idea when the possibility of a one-year deal for a Mercedes return was raised.

If Lewis Hamilton makes his move to Ferrari, it will create a vacant seat at Mercedes. However, Mercedes has been closely observing the development of their protégé Kimi Antonelli, who is widely believed to be their top choice for 2025. In case Mercedes feels that the current Formula 2 sensation is not yet prepared for the role, they might consider a temporary solution before Antonelli is ready.

When asked directly if a one-year deal with Mercedes is possible, Bottas responded by saying that currently, he considers everything as a possible option.

“However, it is clear that long-term preference remains the priority.”

After departing from Mercedes, Bottas has undeniably transformed, showcasing a distinctive mullet hairstyle and initiating a charitable naked calendar.

However, although he emphasized the importance of his team showing him respect, he believed that a “compromise” could be reached on this matter.

“I have confidence in finding the appropriate compromise,” he expressed. “Having experience in the corporate sector, I am well-versed in handling such matters.”

The most important aspect, as I previously stated, is that a team must value and appreciate my abilities and contributions. However, I am open to making compromises when necessary.

Should Mercedes express interest in having Antonelli join George Russell in 2025, it might take some time before a decision is made. This delay could potentially hinder Bottas’ return, as he desires clarity regarding his future prior to the summer break.

He stated, “I’m extremely eager. I wouldn’t even wait for the August break as I believe it will be too late in a season like this.”

“Yes, I’m quite eager. There’s no need to worry right now. As I mentioned, there are ongoing discussions and some progress is being made. So there’s no need to panic, but of course, I’m eager to resolve the situation.”

The Sauber team, led by Bottas, continues their search for their first point in the F1 2024 season.
