Ottawa Senators acquire forwards Xavier Bourgault and Jake Chiasson from Edmonton

The Ottawa Senators have acquired Xavier Bourgault and Jake Chiasson, both forwards, from the Edmonton team.

OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staiosannounced today that the team has acquired forwards Xavier Bourgault and Jake Chiassonfrom the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Roby Jarventie and the team’s fourth-round draft pick in 2025.

Bourgault, hailing from L’Islet, Quebec, stands at 6 feet tall and weighs 185 pounds. He just finished his second season as a professional player within the Oilers’ system. Throughout the season, Bourgault played exclusively for the Bakersfield Condors, the Oilers’ American Hockey League team. He achieved 20 points, comprising eight goals and 12 assists, in 55 regular-season games.

Chiasson, a resident of Abbotsford, British Columbia, had a debut season with the Oilers’ group in 2023-24. Standing at 6’2″ and weighing 187 pounds, he primarily played for the Fort Wayne Komets, the ECHL affiliate of the Edmonton team, participating in 68 out of 69 regular-season games. Throughout these games, Chiasson showcased his skills and contributed 20 points, including nine goals and 11 assists. In addition, he had a brief appearance in one AHL match with the Bakersfield team but was unable to score.

Staios stated that the trade brings in more competition and depth at the forward position. He mentioned that both Xavier and Jake are making positive progress in their development. Considering the potential for increased playing time next season, both players are expected to greatly benefit from this opportunity.

Bourgault was chosen by the Oilers in the 2021 NHL Draft, being selected in the first round (21st overall) and also in the third round (116th overall). Throughout his career in the AHL, Bourgault has played in 117 games exclusively for Bakersfield, accumulating 54 points with 21 goals and 33 assists. On the other hand, Chiasson’s performance in the 2023-24 season resulted in him ranking third among Komets’ rookies in scoring, achieving a total of 20 points.
