NASCAR Cup Series Great American Gateway 400 Predictions & Picks: Will Hamlin Pick Up Another Pocono Win?

After a wet and wild run through the Windy City streets last week, the NASCAR Cup Series is back on the ovals this week for the 21^st race of the season, the Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono (2:30 pm ET, USA).

Last week, Alex Bowman became the latest driver to punch his ticket to the championship playoffs with a victory in the Grant Park 165 in Chicago. It was Bowman’s first win since March 2022, when he won the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Heading into today’s race at Pocono, the race for the regular season championship has intensified with series points leader Kyle Larson finishing second to last in the 40-car field after starting on the pole in Chicago. Most of the playoff field has already been determined, either through wins or points, with only six races remaining in the regular season.

Truex and Gibbs are poised to secure a spot in the Round of 16, despite their lack of victories this season. Even if they fail to secure a win before the regular season finale on September 1st at Darlington, their position remains assured.

Today, Gibbs has an opportunity to solidify his position from pole position after finishing third last week. This marks his second pole of the season, with his first being at the Coca-Cola 600 in May. Even achieving a sixth-place finish, similar to his performance at Charlotte, would greatly enhance his chances of securing a playoff spot. However, if he manages to claim his first Cup Series victory today, any lingering uncertainties will vanish.

Gibbs is on pole, but he isn’t the favorite to win the race, according to Great American Getaway 400 odds at BetOnline. That would be five-time race winner Denny Hamlin, who will start fourth. Hamlin won last year’s race under controversial circumstances after making contact with Larson late in the race.

Great American Getaway 400 Predictions & Picks

• Alex Bowman is listed at +100 on Bovada to finish in the top ten. Despite his track record of only achieving a top-ten finish once after a win, I still believe he has a good chance to perform well today. Notably, in 2020, after winning the first of two Pocono races, Bowman managed to secure a seventh-place finish in the second race the following day.
• Chris Buescher to finish in the top ten (+130 at Bovada): Buescher will start 18^th today, but I really like the value here. Prior to finishing 20^th last week, he finished fifth in back-to-back weeks at New Hampshire and Nashville. With where he is in the points, he needs to have a strong Sunday, and I think he will.
• Larson to finish in the top five (+100 at Bovada): Larson has bounced back well after his poorer finishes this season, and I expect that trend to continue today. After finishing 32^nd at Atlanta in the second race of the season, he won the following week at Las Vegas. And after finishing 34^th at Iowa Speedway, he finished fourth the following week at New Hampshire.
• Denny Hamlin to finish in the top three (+130): Hamlin loves Pocono, and a win or contending for the win would be a welcome sight for him after finishing 30^th in Chicago. It was his fifth straight finish outside of the top ten, a stretch in which he has finished 38^th, 24^th, 24^th, 12^th, and 30^th.
• William Byron is favored to win Group G (+230 at Bovada) and the upcoming race. Despite not winning since the Cook Out 400 at Martinsville, Byron showcased impressive speed during practice and qualifying for the Great American Getaway 400. This is a highly encouraging sign for his chances of victory.
