D-CAMP: Steeves leading and learning this summer
FORT LAUDERDALE – This is a different summer for Ben Steeves.
Last March, the 22-year-old forward signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Florida Panthers. Recently, he took part in the organization’s development camp at Baptist Health IcePlex.
When I first attended the camp in 2022 as an undrafted kid, it felt like a complete journey had come to an end.
Steeves expressed his excitement about the prospect of transitioning from a camp invite to a contract, describing it as “pretty cool.” Initially, he joined as an individual seeking to absorb knowledge from seasoned, more experienced players. However, now that he is under contract, he has noticed a shift in perception, being regarded as a leader. Steeves finds it gratifying to assume a leadership role for younger players, and he appreciates the opportunity to guide them.
Although Steeves knows he still has a long way to go on his personal journey, he aspires to motivate and encourage others through the path he is currently on.
About half of the prospects at last week’s camp, similar to him in the past, were undrafted.
Regardless of whether you possess a contract, the essential element to capturing attention at camps is diligent effort.
According to Steeves, as a free agent, you have the power to determine the significance of development camps. By participating in these camps, you have the opportunity to make a strong impression on the staff and showcase your dedication. This could potentially lead to future prospects of being signed by a team.
Once Steeves completed his first camp with the Panthers, he decided to transfer his skills from the junior ranks in the USHL with Sioux City to the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
He made an impact immediately.
Steeves, who was selected for the 2022-23 NCHC All-Rookie Team, notched an impressive 21 goals, placing him second among NCAA freshmen and tying him for the third-highest goal tally in the conference. Additionally, he made history for his school by becoming the first rookie to score two natural hat tricks.
He netted a total of 24 goals in 37 games during his last season in 2023-24.
Steeves wasted no time in signing with the Panthers, putting pen to paper just nine days after his last collegiate game.
“Within our organization, we are thrilled to have Ben, a talented forward who has consistently demonstrated his scoring prowess over the past two seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth,” stated Panthers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Bill Zito. “We eagerly anticipate his continued growth and progress.”
Immediately after signing, Steeves wasted no time experiencing the professional level as he joined the Charlotte Checkers and got a firsthand taste of the game.
The Bedford, New Hampshire player made his AHL debut on March 27th. Throughout eight games with the Checkers in the previous season, he managed to score a goal and provide an assist, while also achieving a +3 plus/minus rating.
Instead of cautiously testing the waters of professional hockey, he eagerly anticipated plunging headfirst into the experience.
Steeves expressed his enjoyment, stating, “The experience was absolutely enjoyable. Charlotte proved to be an incredible place, and the group I was part of was exceptional. I’ve heard stories of players joining different AHL teams and facing difficulties, struggling to be accepted by their teammates. However, the entire team warmly embraced me. It was truly enjoyable to have numerous opportunities to showcase my abilities in multiple games. Overall, it was a valuable experience that aided in my adjustment to the professional level.”
Although Steeves is known for his goal-scoring abilities, he remains determined to achieve more than just finding the back of the net.
Steeves emphasized that his identity remains the same, but as he transitions into the professional level, he intends to focus on improving his physical fitness and adapting to playing against larger opponents. He acknowledged the significant difference he noticed when moving from college to the AHL, highlighting the importance of execution and maintaining strength on the puck. Possessing confidence in retaining possession is crucial for his game.
After already transitioning from an undrafted player to witnessing the finalization of his first contract, Steeves is determined to dedicate himself to hard work as he embarks on his inaugural professional season.
The previous season served as a milestone, not the ultimate end point.
Steeves expressed his readiness by saying, “I am prepared to tackle the challenges ahead. I am thrilled for the remaining summer days, aiming to build more muscle and continue my diligent efforts. By the time training camp arrives, I will be fully prepared.”
Upon his return, he will have the opportunity to mingle with the champions of the Stanley Cup.
As a budding professional, this opportunity provides a chance to gain valuable knowledge from the most experienced individuals.
“Thinking about it gives me chills,” Steeves expressed. “Those individuals are undeniably winners, so I plan on absorbing everything like a sponge and experiencing the life of a professional. I’ll give my utmost to match their pace.”
