Smashville has been experiencing an exhilarating time since July 1.
Steven Stamkos, a two-time Stanley Cup Champion, proudly wore the Gold and Navy jersey as he aimed for a successful playoff run. Jonathan Marchessault, a Cup winner and recipient of the Conn Smythe Trophy, praised Nashville as a perfect combination. Brady Skjei, an experienced defenseman, confidently stated that his decision to sign was incredibly straightforward.
In the spotlight on Wednesday, goaltender Scott Wedgewood took his turn, accompanied by one of his newest teammates.
There was no doubt in his message – the Nashville Predators are the genuine deal.
“At his introductory press conference on Wednesday, Wedgewood expressed his enthusiasm, stating that by adding proven winners and experienced players who have made deep runs, the team is instantly competitive and prepared to perform at their best whenever needed. He emphasized the excitement that comes with the team’s youthful talent and exceptional skills, making it a thrilling prospect to witness their performances.”
Wedgewood, Skjei Talk Signing with Nashville
Wedgewood, the 31-year-old goaltender, sealed a two-year, $3 million contract with the Predators at the onset of free agency. Following a trade to Dallas in March 2022 and a subsequent two-year deal with the Stars, this fresh agreement symbolized a fresh start for Wedgewood.
Wedgewood expressed how challenging it was when Nashville sought to recruit new players. He also mentioned the difficulties he faced in order to secure a contract and how it took a considerable amount of time. Now, finally, he feels a sense of fulfillment as he reflects on the journey he and his family have gone through.
Last season, Wedgewood had an impressive record for the Stars, starting 28 games and appearing in 32. He achieved a career-best of 16 wins (16-7-5), with a goals-against average of 2.85 and a save percentage of .899. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 201 pounds, he consistently made over 30 saves in seven of his games, including a remarkable 46-save performance on November 2nd against Edmonton. Additionally, from November 2nd to December 23rd, Wedgewood had a remarkable 10-game point streak, going 8-0-2.
On the day he joined the team, he engaged in discussions with Mitch Korn, the Director of Goaltending, and Ben Vanderklok, the Goaltending Coach for the Predators. They talked about their trade, exchanged professional insights, and reestablished their connection. As the newest member of the goaltender room, he is eager to contribute to the team’s success and support a winning organization that has qualified for the playoffs in nine out of the past ten seasons.
Wedgewood expressed how the lineup from Milwaukee and the entire organization instills a sense of confidence to win every night. This mindset serves as a strong foundation and fosters healthy competition within the entire team.
Coming from division rival Dallas, Bridgestone Arena is a place well-known to its opponents. The atmosphere there is truly electrifying, with fans actively engaged and the aftermath of a Predators goal making it quite challenging for any opposing goaltender to defend their net.
Wedgewood is now prepared to embrace the hometown crowd and fully immerse himself in the Smashville culture.
Wedgewood expressed his enthusiasm for playing in front of an enthusiastic crowd, stating, “Playing here for the fans is a great experience. It’s an enjoyable place to be on the ice. I’m definitely excited to be on the opposing team this time.”
