Shane van Gisbergen made a remarkable impact on the NASCAR world last year when he triumphed in the Chicago street race during his first appearance in the Cup Series. Today, SVG will be aiming for another victory in the Windy City as he competes in the Grant Park 165 (4:30 pm ET, NBC).
Yesterday, SVG secured his third victory on a road course in the Xfinity Series season by crossing the finish line first in The Loop 121. He has now become the inaugural driver on the circuit to achieve three wins this season.
Starting today’s race, he will be in the fifth position, trailing behind Kyle Larson, who secured the pole position and is currently leading the series points, as well as Ty Gibbs, Michael McDowell, and Tyler Reddick.
Larson, who secured an eighth-place finish at the Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway last week, currently holds a 20-point advantage over his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott in the Cup Series standings. With only seven regular season races left, Larson is leading the pack.
Larson could significantly advance towards the regular season title if he manages to convert his fifth pole of the season into a win, a feat he last achieved when he secured the series championship at Phoenix in 2021.
However, despite starting up front, he is not the favorite to win in the Windy City. Instead, it’s SVG that sits atop the Grant Park 165 odds at BetOnline, followed by Larson, Gibbs, Reddick, and Christopher Bell, who will start seventh.

- Chris Buescher to finish in the top 10 (+175 at BetOnline): In the other two road races this season, Buescher finished eighth at Circuit of the Americas and third at Sonoma. He will start 16th in today’s Grant Park 165, but don’t be surprised if he somehow winds up in the top five for the fourth time in five races.
- Chase Elliott to finish in the top 10 (+100 at Bovada): In last year’s Chicago street race, Elliott started 26th but finished third. With his history on road courses, you should like his chances to do well again, even though he will start 18th. At Sonoma, he finished fourth behind Larson, McDowell, and Buescher.
- Tyler Reddick to finish in the top five (+110 at Bovada): Reddick finished in the top ten at both Circuit of the Americas (fifth) and Sonoma (eighth), and I feel confident that he will bag his eighth top-five finish of the season in Chicago, where he started second and ran well last year before his day was ended by a crash with 18 laps left.
- Shane van Gisbergen to win (+175): There are a lot of accomplished road course racers in the Grant Park 165 field, but it’s hard to look past SVG. He may be a work in progress on ovals, but he will be in his element today.
