WNBA Best Bets | June 4, 2024

Following a brief Monday hiatus, the WNBA returns with a lineup of three exciting games. Today, we have the privilege of witnessing some of the league’s top teams in action. The unstoppable Sun will clash with the struggling Mystics, while the New York Liberty embark on a journey to Chicago to challenge the formidable Sky. Lastly, in the late-night showdown out west, the Storm will play host to the Mercury.

Out of the limited number of games, only two plays managed to capture my attention. Without any delay, here are the two sides that I favor for tonight’s games.

Mercury (+8.0) at Storm (-110)

Kahleah Copper, the Mercury guard, is in search of a teammate.

Stank:

Today is a significant day for underdogs, as I am particularly fond of two out of the three underdogs playing.

After prevailing in their recent matches against emerging teams, Mercury and Storm have gained momentum. Storm achieved a remarkable 15-point victory against the Fever away, whereas the Mercury dominated the Sparks with an impressive 19-point win. Both teams find themselves in favorable positions, however, considering the circumstances, I believe the Mercury are the more experienced and prepared squad.

Phoenix’s journey has been full of ups and downs, especially during their three-game road stretch against tough opponents. After a disappointing loss to the Sun where they couldn’t even score 50 points, their shooting performance was far from satisfactory. They shot a poor 23.8% from the floor and a dismal 3.7% from behind the arc. Unfortunately, their struggles continued as they lost their next two games against the Liberty and Lynx.

I am skeptical of the claim that the Storm are nearly ten points superior to the Mercury, even when considering their home-court advantage. If the Mercury can find their rhythm, perform consistently, and, most importantly, convert their shots, unlike their previous game against the Sun, they should have no trouble surpassing this point differential. Despite the absence of their key player Britteny Griner, this team remains well-built.

Sky (+8.5) vs Liberty (-110)

Stank:

The spot I enjoy the most in sports is quite disappointing.

The Indiana Fever secured their first victory at home this season in a grueling match against the Chicago Sky on Saturday. However, they faced a tough challenge soon after as they had to quickly travel and face the New York Liberty in a consecutive game. Unfortunately, the Fever suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of New York, who dominated the game with a staggering 36-point lead.

The Liberty are now set to travel to Chicago where they will face the Sky team, which is currently grappling with controversy surrounding guard Chennedy Carter and Angel Reese following their unfortunate incident with Caitlin Clarke over the weekend. However, such dramatic situations can either fuel a team’s motivation or dampen their energy. Personally, I believe the Liberty will take the court tonight with a strong determination to prove themselves and will put up a solid fight against one of the top teams in the league.

The Sky, a promising young team, have showcased their impressive defensive skills by consistently limiting opposing teams to under 80 points. They currently rank fourth in the league for fewest points allowed per game, conceding only 78.4 points each contest. On the offensive front, they have a solid average of just under 80 points per game. Considering their exceptional defensive strength, I firmly believe that Chicago is in a great position, particularly after a challenging loss and with the advantage of playing at home.
