While Helmut Marko and Red Bull are ready for a fresh McLaren “challenge” at the Monaco Grand Prix, they are not the only threat expected.

McLaren’s entrance into the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola was shrouded in immense curiosity, sparked by Lando Norris’ unexpected victory in the previous F1 race in Miami. The impressive performance displayed by the enhanced McLaren MCL38 raised questions about their capability to challenge Red Bull once more at Imola. These questions were swiftly answered, as McLaren indeed delivered a remarkable performance at Imola.

Verstappen managed to secure his fifth win of the season at Imola, holding off his competitors. However, Norris made a remarkable late surge and finished a mere seven-tenths behind the current Championship leader. Norris expressed his belief that if he had been given one more lap, he would have been in a prime position to launch an attack.

Marko anticipates McLaren to pose a challenge to Red Bull in Monaco, while also acknowledging Charles Leclerc’s potential as a threat at his home race for Ferrari. Marko noted that both Ferrari and Red Bull have unveiled upgrades at Imola.

“We definitely have to take on the challenge with McLaren,” Marko told De Telegraaf.

“We are heading to Monaco next, where qualifying takes center stage. I believe this will be our toughest race yet, particularly due to the challenging bumps and kerbstones on the track.”

“I hold high expectations for Ferrari, particularly for Charles Leclerc.”

Leclerc has openly acknowledged that he hasn’t been fortunate while racing at his home track, not only in Formula 1 but throughout his racing career.

Despite the potential absence of luck, Leclerc expressed confidence in his performance on the streets of Monte Carlo, supporting Marko’s belief that Ferrari will be formidable.

Leclerc expressed his deep attachment to Monaco during the post-Emilia Romagna Grand Prix press conference, stating, “Monaco holds a significant place in my heart,” in an interview with media, including PlanetF1.com’s Thomas Maher.

“It is true that my previous race performances haven’t been very successful. Nevertheless, I have consistently maintained a strong pace, which gives me the confidence that this year will be no different.”

Nevertheless, Monaco’s unique nature requires us to approach it with a fresh perspective. The significance of free practice cannot be overstated as it allows us to gradually develop our rhythm. However, I have faith in our abilities and believe we will excel in this race.

“I have mentioned multiple times before that the routes I used to take by bus to school in my younger days are now the very same roads I drive on in a Formula 1 car. This fact adds an extra layer of significance for me, making it a truly special experience. I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to compete in Monaco, a track that holds great importance for every driver due to its demanding nature. It holds even more significance for me as it is my home race.”

Verstappen secured victories for Red Bull in the 2021 and 2023 Monaco GPs, while Sergio Perez triumphed in 2022.
