Due to an injury sustained by Beterbiev, the highly anticipated light-heavyweight title fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol has been postponed.
After years of individual dominance, the undefeated pair was scheduled for a match-up on June 1 in Saudi Arabia. The highly anticipated event aimed to determine the world’s top 175lb fighter.
Nevertheless, boxing enthusiasts will be compelled to endure an extended period of anticipation as news broke that Beterbiev, aged 39, had incurred a meniscus rupture during training, resulting in the postponement of the much-anticipated fight.
Top Rank, the promoter of Beterbiev, released a statement that said:
Due to a training injury, Artur Beterbiev, the reigning light heavyweight champion holding the WBC, IBF, and WBO titles, has unfortunately suffered a ruptured meniscus. As a result, the highly anticipated world title clash against Dmitry Bivol, the WBA champion, which was set to take place on Saturday, June 1 at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has been postponed.
The intention is to rearrange the Beterbiev-Bivol match before the year concludes, and further information will be shared at the appropriate time.
The recent injury delay adds to the frustrations that have been a part of the formidable Beterbiev’s career.
After his scheduled fight against Callum Smith was postponed due to a bone infection in his jaw, he eventually secured a TKO7 victory on January 13. Similarly, his previous match against Anthony Yarde, initially planned for October 2022, was rescheduled and resulted in a TKO8 win in January 2023.
Boxing fans worldwide have expressed their disappointment upon hearing the news of the postponement of the Beterbiev-Bivol fight. For years, these fans have eagerly anticipated a showdown between two of the sport’s top contenders.
