Gervonta “Tank” Davis makes a comeback on June 15 after a year away from the ring, appearing to be in a positive state.
On Amazon Prime pay-per-view, the WBA lightweight title will be contested by the 29-year-old champion against Frank Martin at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
In March 2023, Davis, a prominent figure in the boxing world, emerged victorious against Ryan Garcia in an epic showdown. Achieving a seventh-round stoppage, he solidified his status as a captivating entertainer. Unfortunately, despite this triumph over “King Ry,” various challenges beyond the boxing ring hindered any progress he had made.
In November 2020, a hit and run incident occurred, causing injuries to four individuals, one of whom was a pregnant woman. In May, the offender received a sentence of 90 days of home detention, three years of probation, and 200 hours of community service. However, due to violating the terms of his sentence, Davis was imprisoned and instructed to complete the rest of his punishment in a Baltimore jail. Despite this, his name remained associated with numerous significant fights involving Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez.
Davis’s coach, Calvin Ford, has remarked how his fighter has matured and is in a better place. Boxing News asked “Tank” what the reason was for these self-improvements.
He mentioned that he was doing fine because he was surrounded by good individuals.
“It’s a positive outcome to avoid getting into trouble. It’s better to stay out of the way,” he supplemented.
While Davis may not appeal to everyone, his presence in the ring is beneficial for the sport. His fights garner attention from both the public and celebrities, and he possesses the rare ability to attract mainstream audiences. This is significant because boxing seldom has the opportunity to reach such wide audiences. However, the people of Baltimore hold the utmost importance to Davis.
He says that many individuals can relate.
I have always been open about my story, and I believe many individuals can find resonance in it. I sense that there is a natural attraction between me and many others.
Davis was asked by BN about his experience as a role model for those who are drawn to him.
“I wouldn’t label it as me being a role model; it’s simply me being my authentic self, striving for excellence… I’m not entirely sure, to be honest.”
Despite his limited speech, Davis has emerged victorious in all 29 of his boxing matches. On the horizon is Frank Martin, an undefeated lightweight trained by Derrick James, who has yet to taste defeat in 18 bouts. At a recent press conference in Las Vegas on May 4, both fighters confronted each other directly, engaging in a heated exchange of words that nearly escalated into a chaotic situation.
When questioned about the outcome of the fight on June 15, Davis confidently stated, “There will be a definitive victory.”
