Filip Hrgovic is anticipating a match against Daniel Dubois on June 1 for the vacant IBF heavyweight championship. The victor of this fight will also have the opportunity for a highly anticipated showdown against Anthony Joshua at Wembley.
Dubois, the promising heavyweight hopeful under Frank Warren’s guidance, has been chosen to go up against Hrgovic in the 5 vs 5 event between Team Matchroom and Queensberry, where Hrgovic is a member.
Following the collision between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk in Riyadh on May 18, the showdown to determine the undisputed heavyweight champion is scheduled to occur a fortnight later. Nevertheless, it is highly anticipated that the IBF will promptly strip the victorious fighter of their title.
Joshua was previously speculated to contend for the vacant championship, however, Hrgovic comprehends that the belt will truly be up for grabs during his encounter with Dubois.
Hrgovic stated that the intention is to have the vacant IBF title up for grabs against Dubois.
“I believe the ideal match for the vacant IBF belt would be between Dubois and me. The victor of this bout should then face Joshua, although boxing is unpredictable. If Fury emerges as the winner, I anticipate he will eagerly pursue a match against Joshua, having no intention to face Usyk once more.”
The upcoming shows on May 18 and June 1 mark significant events in the Saudi Arabian boxing revolution. However, Turki Al-Alshikh, the chairman of the General Entertainment Authority in the Kingdom, has recently disclosed their intention to organize a show at Wembley in September. This event will serve as a promotional spectacle for Riyadh Season.
Hrgovic is confident that either he or Dubois could headline a match against Joshua at the national stadium, under the iconic arch.
“In my opinion, if Usyk defeats Fury, there will likely be a rematch, and the winner between me and Dubois will have the opportunity to fight Joshua instead,” he explained.
“Joshua represents the ultimate challenge for me, and I am determined to conquer Dubois first and then face him at Wembley in September. It would truly be a flawless scenario.”
On the other hand, Dubois is indifferent to the presence of a championship belt in his bout against Hrgovic. However, he firmly believes that a win will pave the way for an epic showdown with Joshua within their own nation.
He stated that regardless of whether our battle is for the world title or not, he currently holds that position with the IBF, and I am determined to claim it. Hence, this fight holds significant importance.
“It would be a smart business move for the winner of my fight against Hrgovic to face AJ next. Imagine two London boys battling it out for the world title – that would be absolutely crazy!”
However, it is up to my team to handle that; my focus is solely on training in the gym. Nevertheless, if I were to achieve a world title in London, it would be an immense milestone for me.
