In the upcoming rematch against Josh Taylor on Saturday night (May 25) in Leeds, Jack Catterall firmly asserts that he will not let emotions influence his performance.
Two super-lightweights will finally face off at the First Direct Arena after a span of two years since one of the most controversial judges’ rulings in recent history. It was on that fateful night in February in Glasgow when Taylor emerged victorious with a split decision. The aftermath was intense, emotional, and filled with heated online exchanges from both sides.
Catterall and Taylor’s disdain for one another surfaced again during two recent press conferences in Edinburgh and Manchester to promote the fight. The Englishman told Boxing News, however, that emotion will not take over in the ring on Saturday and affect his performance.
Catterall stated that he approaches fights without relying on emotion. Instead, he remains calm and focused, making calculated decisions. However, he acknowledged that there have been emotional moments, with intense feelings and heated exchanges. Nevertheless, he emphasized the importance of keeping those emotions separate, fighting strategically, and not allowing them to impact his performance.
Catterall, with a record of 28-1 (13 KOs), has been nearly flawless in his recent fights against Darragh Foley and Jorge Linares. Matchroom, his promotional company, has a strong position in the super-lightweight division, giving Catterall a promising future with potential big fights if he defeats Taylor. If ‘El Gato’ manages to win and the rematch is more exciting for fans, a trilogy bout could also be a possibility.
Catterall attributed the success to the broadcasters, specifically DAZN and Matchroom.
“If they consider the fight to have been explosive and powerful, we will have a rematch and create a trilogy. However, my current priority is to defeat him on Saturday. I aim to bring closure to this chapter and avoid discussing Josh any further.”
