Today, on July 25th, Jai Opetaia, the current IBF World cruiserweight champion, unleashed a vehement assault directed at Chris Billam-Smith, the reigning WBO titlist.
Opetaia made an appearance as a guest on DAZN’s broadcast of the Justis Huni-Troy Pilcher fight card in Fortitude Valley, Australia. During the interview, the fierce 29-year-old was questioned about his intense desire for the unification fight against the British opponent.
His response was, “I am prepared for that confrontation.”
“They have repeatedly mentioned that they are waiting for negotiations and such, but it’s complete nonsense. He clearly doesn’t want to engage in that fight. It’s a simple task. He would receive the largest paycheck of his career and perform on the grandest stage he’s ever experienced. It’s an obvious decision to accept, unless they are intentionally avoiding it.”
We have extended the offer, and it remains open. If he chooses not to accept it, he is evading the fight.
In May, Opetaia achieved a remarkable feat by reclaiming the IBF strap for the second time, defeating Mairis Briedis once more. This triumph occurred two years after the Australian boxer defied expectations and secured victory over the former cruiserweight champion through a points decision.
Billam-Smith achieved redemption last month when he secured a victory over Richard Riakporhe, who had previously handed him his sole career defeat. The triumph, earned through a points decision at Selhurst Park, marked the second successful defense of the championship belt that Billam-Smith had claimed from Lawrence Okolie in May 2023. Despite being referred to as the “Gentleman” at the age of 33, Billam-Smith has boldly expressed his aspirations to unify the division and attain the status of undisputed champion. However, in order to accomplish this feat, he will need to surpass Opetaia, widely regarded as the top contender in the 200lbs weight class.
