On September 20, JAIME MUNGUIA will step back into the ring, this time accompanied by a fresh promoter in his corner.
ESPN has just announced a surprising piece of news: the Mexican super-middleweight fighter has made a deal with Top Rank in a co-promotional agreement for multiple fights. This move has resulted in the fighter severing ties with Golden Boy Promotions, as revealed by Zanfer.
It has been reported that Munguia, who suffered a defeat in his last fight against fellow countryman and undefeated 168lbs champion Canelo Alvarez, is set to take on Erik Bazinyan on September 20. Furthermore, there is another alteration in Munguia’s team as the 27-year-old has decided to part ways with Freddie Roach as his trainer and has opted to reunite with Erik Morales, a former four-weight world champion, to guide his boxing career.
Golden Boy Promotions and their promoter Oscar De La Hoya will suffer a significant setback with the departure of Munguia, whom they have been associated with since his initial world title fight in May 2018. Munguia’s victory over Sadam Ali in the fourth round granted him the WBO super-welterweight championship, his sole world title achievement thus far in a career that saw him compete in the middleweight division from 2020 to 2022.
Munguia’s notable achievements include a thrilling victory against Sergiy Derevyanchenko 13 months ago, which was an intense and captivating fight. Continuing his success, the boxer from Tijuana defeated John Ryder in nine rounds in January.
Munguia’s only loss occurred in May during the all-Mexican showdown with Canelo. The undisputed champion emerged victorious through a unanimous decision, with Munguia being knocked down in the fourth round.
Earlier this year, Top Rank made an additional addition to their super-middleweight division by signing a co-promotional agreement with the highly regarded Christian Mbilli. Originally from Cameroon but representing France, Mbilli showcased his skills by defeating Mark Heffron in just one round in May. He is scheduled to enter the ring again on August 17 against Derevyanchenko. If Mbilli and Munguia succeed in their upcoming challenges, there is a possibility that they could face off towards the end of 2024 or possibly in 2025.
