Middleweight debutant Sherif Lawal passes away, aged 29

Yesterday evening (May 12), a tragic incident occurred at Harrow Leisure Centre resulting in the unfortunate loss of life for middleweight Sherif Lawal.

The 29-year-old engaged in a six-round bout against Malam Valera, marking the inaugural match on the card.

In round four, Lawal found himself on the ground when Valera landed a powerful right hand to his temple. Referee Lee Every started the count, but upon noticing Lawal’s distress, he quickly ended the match. Trainer CJ Hussein rushed to assist his boxer, and soon after, the ringside doctor and paramedics from the British Boxing Board arrived. Lawal received CPR for a duration of 10-15 minutes before being transported to Northwick Park Hospital by ambulance. Unfortunately, at the hospital, he was pronounced dead.

The emcee of the evening declared that the show was canceled, and the crowd, including numerous Albanians, respectfully accepted the decision. They quietly left the venue after eagerly anticipating the performances of light-heavyweight Amarildo Bakaj and cruiserweight Roberto Bakaj.

Last year, Lawal had showcased his unwavering commitment as a member of the St Pancras Amateur Boxing Club by participating in the National Elite championships at the highest level.

In an article last month in the Camden New Journal Hussein described Lawal as a “real inspiration to all the younger boxers at the gym.”

The entire team at Boxing News extends their heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Sherif.
