Ryan Garcia’s weight issues, which had been a cause for concern among many, were confirmed on Friday morning when he weighed in 3.2 pounds over the limit for his 140-pound title fight against Devin Haney.
When Garcia privately stepped onto the scale of the New York State Athletic Commission, he registered an official weight of 143.2 pounds. Haney fulfilled his contractual duty by successfully meeting the weight requirement for their highly anticipated DAZN Pay-Per-View main event.
At the time this story was published, it remained uncertain whether Garcia would make an effort to shed the necessary weight within the hour allowed by the NYSAC to meet the super lightweight limit of 140 pounds or below. Nevertheless, Garcia is anticipated to face penalties from the NYSAC and Haney, and the scheduled 12-round main event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn will proceed as planned.
Haney, undefeated with a record of 31 wins and 15 knockouts, hails from Henderson, Nevada. His opponent, Garcia, has a record of 24 wins and 1 knockout and comes from Victorville, California. Both fighters are set to engage in a ceremonial weigh-in at Barclays Center, with the event taking place at 7pm BST and 2 p.m. ET.
Golden Boy Promotions released a statement at 5:44pm.
“Ryan has weighed-in over his contractual weight. He will honour the handshake make at the final press conference yesterday. We have a fight.”
